Hi - New to this so please bear with me!!!

Just bought a Mitsubishi GTO - J Reg - and am having trouble getting it into reverse gear. Sometimes it takes several goes to get in, other times it goes straight in. All other gears are fine. Wondering if it might need the gearbox oil changing, but cant find which oil to use.

If anyone has got any advice, would be much appreciated.

Many thanks

Angela

You could try changing the oil but to be honest I think a lot of GTOs are like this. My 3000GT can be a pain but I just double-declutch i.e. push in clutch, pop into neutral and release clutch, then press clutch and put into reverse. Seems to work for me most of the time.

i had a gto a few years ago and found the people in the owners club, very helpful and extremely knowledgeable

Fantastic idea!! Why didn't I think of that??confused

Actually, hubby tried it again yesterday, and sort of crunched it into 4th gear. Now it seems to go into reverse every time!!! Must of been frightened of hubby's BIG hammer!!!eek

Would like to change the oil, but not sure what oil to use? Any ideas??

Thanks

If you look under where the air filter joins the y-pipe you should be able to see the counter-balance on the gear linkages. Check nothing is interfering with it as this can cause gear changing problems. Also, check your clutch fluid level is up to the line on the reservoir.

Also - link for gearbox oil below;

New gearbox oil with a little bit of Slick50 improves crunchy gearboxes, apparently.

I would seriously not recommend putting Slick50 in a GTO gearbox.

Not much help but I have the same problem and it has got slowly worse over the 6 years I've owned it. It's annoying but not crippling so I put up with it. Mine's a 6-speed so a replacement box is out of the question. I was quoted about £2,000 for a strip down and rebuild with new parts as needed.
