Rebuilt gearbox lasts 16000 miles - Cant be right?

I have a Mitsubishi Shogun, (TVR Tuscan & Scooby as well) that has 86000 miles on the clock. Back in July 2007 ,with 70,000 miles showing,the gearbox started to play up, would not select a gear (Auto & Tiptronic) so I took it to a local specialist gearbox dealer who rebuilt the gearbox at a cost of £2700. Last week I was out in the car and the 'N' light flashed above the 'D', so I tried tiptronic which would only select 3rd gear. I took the car back and the guy said it was faulty and would need to be rebuilt. I dont think Ive got 'mug' on my forehead but he now says that ive got to pay again to have it rebuilt. The warranty is for 12 months or 12000 miles. What do u guys think?

16000 miles is not long for the gearbox to become faulty. I'd be concerned about the quality of the build.

If he were a reasonable chap he would offer you a much discounted price, maybe at cost to show good faith and to hopefully get you to come back to him another time in the future.

1 yr or 12K miles is the guarantee and if it's gone wrong outside of that time legally you haven't got a leg to stand on unless the build could be proven to be faulty in the first place.

Ouch! Unless you can prove he didn't do the job properly you don't have a leg to stand on. Best bet would be get a second hand one from a scrapy.

Either get a second hand one from the scrappy or use someone else... he's probably not under any obligation to do the job for you for free or at a discounted price as both warranty have fallen through... have you checked model specific forums to see if its a common fault?
