Right then guys - any owners / previous owners etc of Evo 6's about?

I'm a member over on the MLR so get to read through everything there but I figure they probabaly get a bit fed up of all the same questions poppiong up over and over again.

A few to start with:

1: Looking for a 6 - not a Tommi or anything, just a standard GSR 6. - Prices suggest between 5500 and 10k - that sound about right?

2: How does tax work on these? I can't seem to find a straight answer and the problem seems to be some of these are only just being imported as the SVA test not needed etc etc but some have been here longer so may be less?

3: Servicing - yup I know they need quite alot of it - about every 4500 miles or 6 months about right? - and this includes what?

4: V power or optimax only? (or supermarkte high octane stuff)

5: Average MPG to be expected on a motorway run at about 80mph?

6: Average MPG when I get carried away?

7: Anything else I should be looking at / worried about?

Thanks in adavcne

Hi Dan,

The memories are flooding back.

1: I have no idea about current prices

2: Is this import tax?

3: Yes it is every 4.5k. Mine always had oil and filter done but for the life of me I can't remember what else. The Active YAW Control fluid does need doing as well but I can't remember how often that needs doing. (not the best answer to the question I know but it was 99 when I bought it). I did 32,000 miles in mine over the 2 years I had it so servicing and tyres was quite a lot over the 2 years.

4: Mine always had the best fuel I could get my hands on at the time due to not getting much out of a tank.

5: I never worked out the MPG as I was getting about 110 miles out of a tank for normal driving.

6: Less than half that when a bit more excited behind the wheel.

7: I'll have a think about this one.

Thanks.

On the tax info - i'm thinking road tax - i know depending on age of vehicle, when it was imported etc decides how much the road tax is.

WAnted to know if there was a hard or fast rule?

Chees for hte info so far!

Hi, I have an Evo 8, broadly similar car..mine's an import and I pay £190 a year for road tax, expect about 200 miles per tank, the expensive services are the 18,000 mile ones, and the cam/balancer shaft belt service...recently paid £780 for this service on mine at the dealers, and the dealers are generally pretty poor in my experience, the Ralliart dealer near me got the balancer belt timing 180 degrees out, and had to have it back for 4 days to figure out what they had done wrong!....go to a specialist, get better service, pay far less.
Brembo brake pads are barmy money from the dealers, £180 iirc.

Nothing has gone wrong on mine, but it's only done 30k.....things to look out for are AYC pumps and transfer boxes. They are generally regarded as very strong and reliable cars. If the car is modified, find out what bhp it has and, more importantly, if it's been remapped, who by, as a safe map by a knowledgeable tuner will ensure reliability. If it has more than circa 370 brake on a high level of boost ( 2bar) and similarly high levels of torque on standard engine internals, it's gonna be running pretty close to what the standard conrods can take. Always run it on 98/99 octane.

Good luck, they're great cars, if you choose well they're hard to replace. Cheers, Andy.

lol, you can always ask on the mlr, i spend my entire time asking idiots questions, everyone's very helpful!

1. a standard 6 gsr i'd be amazed if you paid £10k. TMEs go for around £10k, red ones £11-£15k.

2. yeah, about £200 i think.

3. indeed, every 4,500 or 6 months. obviously you don't HAVE to do it that regularly, but peopel are wary of buying one not serviced well.

4. ALWAYS super unleaded, and wherever possible V power as it's 99 RON.

5. i'd say 22mpg?

6. depends how carried away! i can rinse a tank in an hour on the track!

7. take someone with you to look at the car who knows a bit about them if you can. ask on the mlr, anyone in your area will be glad to help out.

This link shows you what is checked/changed per service and will give you an idea of costs for taking it to a specialist (you can find your local one on MLR).

I had a Evo 6 Tommi.

Vehicle duty depends when it was imported (post 2007 you are looking at £450 odd pounds a year to tax), but also how the importer filled out the paperwork, as some manage to impor these and still get them signed off as PLG rather than on emmission levels.

Servicing will include frequent oil changes and at 9000 mile you want to check AYC fluid and change it. Speak to a specialist (I used MA Developments) and they can advise.

Loads about so pick carefully as not cheap to fix, particulary AYC diff probs.

Cheers,

Mark
