Hi can anyone help? My Mazda RX8 still wont start after closing down. Im doing all the right things you all advised last time. It runs like a dream but if you stop when its warmed up it wont go for at least 20 mins after. Starter sounds a little weak but ok otherwise. Im frustrated anyone in the area who knows these cars who dosent charge a fortune? (cleveland uk)RX8 231 PS 2004 47K

The car we've had difficulty with has been cured by replacing the cat.

Not 100% sure of the reasoning behind it, but apparently when all that unburnt fuel goes into the exhaust it kills the catalytic converter (which i understand), but with the RX8 the fuel takes a lot of oil with it too, and i gather that this can line the pores of the cat and coke it up and just block the thing up.

It's part of the exhaust system, but i don't know what our chap paid for his. It's worth doing a google for the RX8 forums, and you'll get solid info there. smile

If you've just bought the car and you're not happy you should try to get it taken back. I do know that the engine of an RX8 is more temperamental than a conventional engine, and there are techniques you need to know to avoid problems such as flooding (too much petrol preventing the spark plugs from working) and so on.

Sorry to hear of your woes - although if you get it sorted and get to understand the car they're a great drive. yes

Sounds like the coils and leads have gone. This can often cause a misfire which knackers the CAT. They need changing at anywhere between 30-40K

I think you have left it too long, take it back to the dealer and demand something is done.

Yep it sounds like the coils have gone. If you dont replace them soon the coils will fail and burn out the inside if the cat. This is not good and is a very expensive fix. This just happened to mine as 2 coils catastrophically failed and totally burnt out the inside of the cat. In total the repair bill was £1700.

Ouch. I thought I knew everything about the RX8 until mine broke down the day I sold it. 30 mins after the buyer drove it away the CEL ligth came on. Turns out it was leads and coils. Luckily I had extended the Mazda warranty but it was a pisser for both the seller and buyer. It was on 40K so had probably done well to get that far without them being changed. Totally changed my view of the car now.

That does sound a bit like compression issues which isnt good news Im afraid. Added to the fact you might have the old style dodgy starter motor from the sound of it which cant spin a possibly worn and hot motor fast enough to fire.

Did I read that you have a warranty ? If so get it back to the garage pronto.

The RX does have some idiosyncrasies and its important youre aware of them. A bit of time reading the RX8 forum should help http://www.rx8ownersclub.co.uk/forum/
