Hopefully someone on here can help. I'm looking to get a EVO 7 or a Scooby but the insurance is coming out at stupid prices.

I'm 18 so I expected it to be a lot but 10 Grand is a joke although I would pay up to 7 grand, thats how bad I want one of these cars!

So is there any people around my age that managed to get insurance on one of these cars and have you got any tips for getting it cheaper?

Or are there any insurance brokers on this site that want to make someones year? lol

Thanks in advance

You could try some specialists, adrian flux, sky, noel dazely, chris knott etc but they will likely be very expensive also, or may refuse to quote as you are under 25. But the fact of the matter is, you are a very young inexperienced driver for this kind of car. You say that you are willing to pay £7000 for insurance, are you really sure it will be worth it? That is a huge amount of money to waste considering you have nothing physical to show for it. Perhaps wait another 1-2 years, the extra ncb and experience should bring down insurance prices hugely. I'm sure there must be other cars that you like, that won't be so horrendously expensive and difficult to insure.

Yep - £7-10k a year is potty.

Cars that are still fun to drive but more affordable to insure:
'Proper' Mini;
'Proper' Beetle (no, seriously - rear engine, rear wheel drive);
Skoda Rapid (as above but even more so . . . if you can find one);
BMW E21 or E30 . . . .

Thanks, I'll try some of the specialist insurers.

The thing is I've wanted a Scooby or Evo since I was like 10 so I've really got those stuck in my head

How can you afford to be spending that sort of money just on insurance at 18? eek

As for an insurer, I'd recommend Elephant/Bell as they're good with younger drivers. Perking it on the street actually seems to be the cheapest option compared to a garage or driveway- change these in the quote and see.

Finally, if you're desperate for a "rally car" at 18, you may want to take a look at a Celica GT-Four. All the rallying pedigree of the other two, coupe body, big decent brakes as standard and generally a lot cheaper to insure than the two you mention (especially UK models).

You should deffinately just insure somthing cheap and sensible for 2 years. You'll be 20 with 2 years bonus and holding a licence for 2 years it will save you so much money.

I was still getting silly (£3/£4/£5000) quotes for my EVO VI (best model IMO) until I was 23/24, then they dropped significantly until I finally succumbed when I was 27 for £1200 with Bell.

The second years quote was much better (Bell again @ £850) as I'd had a years experience with the car.

The third and fourth (with Pace Ward) have been both around the £770 mark including track day cover and MLR discount.

As a comparison, my daily driver Mazda6 1.8 is just under £190 a year for the same area / risk.

These are group 44 cars (out of 50) and the insurance is priced accordingly.

Good luck with your search, but I think you're going to be disappointed.

John.

PS, Did I mention the VI is the best model?

Sorry buddy, you will have to pay your dues behind the wheel in crappy cars, like the rest of us did when we were young. Else, find a money tree.

I would get an Toyota Aygo or something for a couple of years, thrash it, crash it, THEN go for the Evo.

Seeing as you're looking at a VII and not an IX or X suggests to me you're not flash with cash but you reckon £600 a month isn't bad for insurance as it's only 50% of your take home pay.

Realistically that's not sensible, what are you going to spend on fuel, repairs, tyres, servicing?

Buy something fun but cheap run it for a few years and earn some NCB, wanting an evo or subaru is ~impossible as it's a car all chavs dream of owning, they they crash them in a car-park causing tens of thousands of damage and insurance companies have had enough.

Lol if you just like the looks of them then why not get a subaru GX? :P Put some tinsel on it and put OZ alloys, none of your friends with notice ;P in der 1l Aygo's in all! wink

You really should prioritize better tbh... is having a Scooby or a Evo that important that you sacrifice the best of your 18 year old life for? I'm only going on a whim here, but when i was 18 and wanted something like that i'd probably have to put in 60hour weeks working non stop and absolutely no partying... Get something small and fun and settle for it while saving for you're scoob or evo when you're 21...

Being 20 on a P1 Scooby or Evo VI i'm quoted £3000 and thats with a low risk area, 2 years ncb and 2 and a half years driving experience... Could i afford to pay that? probably, but i'd rather spend that money on drinking and socializing. You must realize that you're young right now and although you probably love cars to bits like the rest of us, you should really think about the other luxuries of life instead of being narrow minded and affixed on the one object.
