subaru impreza import whining??

Good morning!
My uncle owns an L reg subaru impreza import,
I was getting a lift home the other day when i noticed a whining,
A bloke down the pub told him it was the gearing cooling down but this was both under throttle and without throttle.
My thought was the turbo bearings as he rants this thing every where!
I believe all impreza imports of this age were fitted with a TD05 turbo?
Just wondered if my thoughts were right and if not did anyone know what the problem was?
Help is greatly appreciated, Especially by my 43yr old petrolhead uncle!

Where is the noise coming from?

I'd put money on it being the power steering pump. Give the wheel a turn while stationary and engine running/bonnet up, it should get worse with pressure. If this is the case check fluid & level, check to see if fluid is leaking out the back, check tension of belt. If all of this looks ok then perhaps the steering pump bearing is on its way out.

Mine whines too. I have a new belt and another pump to go on but it has not failed in 10k miles so not changed it yet.
