Best thing you could do for cheap is to fit the gearbox and diff from a bugeye WRX because it has the same front driveshaft inputs as a classic, and you need to make sure the diff ratios match to avoid drivetrain issues. I'm not sure though if on a 92-96 you have to change front/rear hubs as well. I know for 99/00 cars there's no hub change involved as it's a straight swap.

A newage 5spd box should take 330ftlb all day. When my original bugeye 5spd went i converted to a later 2005 5spd and the driveshafts as the inputs are different on 03-on cars, and this is currently taking around 360-370ftlb at full chat although i'm trying to be mechanically sympathetic with it.

Next best thing is get your gearbox internals beefed up with a PPG 1-4 gearset and you get to keep all your other drivetrain bits original.

Thereafter i think it would have to be a 6spd conversion from a bugeye STi. You'll need the rear diff, prop, gearbox linkage, flywheel and maybe front/rear hubs as well. There must be someone on here that's done the conversion that would advise better.

There is no cheap option.

You have to pay to play at that level of power or be have good AA cover.

Uprated gearsets or 6 Speed is the only way to really cope at that level.

My TY754 couldn't cope with 340/340 and had to go for an uprated gearset (now up for sale due to car breaking).

My 05 5spd is coping ok but then i don't rag it up the strip regular. At current power levels i'm pretty sure the box will go bang after a handfull of good hard launches. These days i only give it a rag on nice quiet country lanes and dual carrigeways when i'm mapping it.

Today i read on Scabbynet that ScoobyClinic are now advertising their own 5spd gearbox internals for late classic v5/v6 and newage 5spds.

After killing PPG internals on their own car they felt it was prudent to come up with something themselves that did the job properly, and it seems they have. Prices look OK if it really means a properly bulletproof 5spd. If it's as strong as a newage 6spd they are going to sell lots.

Less faffing about than a 6spd conversion....Gearbox in, gearbox out, job done. Just better make sure you've got a good strong clutch!!

It will take months of testing and proving on lots of cars for a new gearkit to show whether it is worthy or not imho. Holding together for the odd event was never really a problem. Standard 5 speed boxes have run 10s on the 1/4mile.

Sit tight and see if they really are any better than PPG.

We've broken so many PPG boxes now we have given up. Siz speed box is the one to have, but the ratios are crap. Unless you can find an Sti Forrester one.

Thought the US spec STI 6 speed box had reasonable ratios too. Still difficult to find.

And it probably doesn't matter how good the internals are in a 5 speed box - I am of the opinion that the problem is the case.

Isn't it the JDM 6spd boxes that have the shorter ratios??

Myth imho

Mine is taking 665bhp and 540lb but a launch at weekend broke output shaft which is an oe part

I have 6spd with forester sti gearing to fit smile but will miss the 5spd

Identical except uk has longer 5th and 6th ratios.

The diff and drop gears are different but create the same final drive

He's probably sympathetic to the car i.e not launching and going WOT in 1st etc.
