Toyota RAV 4 Automatic Gearbox Issues
Discussion
My wife's RAV 4 has just had to have its auto gearbox and ECU replaced; car is 2003 with 59K miles, at a cost of £2700. Toyota UK are not accepting responsibility (at the present time) and I have had to pay but Toyota US have confirmed an ECU fault is causing gearbox failure and are paying for the repair of over 250,000 RAV 4's made between 2001 and 2003.
Has anyone else suffered a similar problem with their RAV 4 as my local gearbox specialist has stated that they are getting 1 per day with the same fault.

Think I'm about to have the same problem, a 2002 Rav4 Auto with 57K miles. At the moment it drives fine whenever I've tried it but wife says sometimes it "feels like handbrake is still on"
Google is telling me one of the symptoms of this is occasional starting off in a high gear which would explain that.
Seems to be if you catch it early enough the auto gearbox will be fine, if you leave it the ECU starts telling the valves in the gearbox to do mad things and that's what causes mechanical stuff to break.
A few of the ECU Repair places seems to recognise the fault and although I can't see a specific price for this problem the indications are it's a couple of hundred quid and simple unplug, send off, update firmware, send back, plug back in again. (just loose use of car for a few days).
Doesn't help you Skylark but thought I'd add this in case anyone with the same problem is searching.
