Can anyone tell me the pro's and con's of having either a subaru impreza wrx [Non sti] to a subaru impreza turbo 2000 ?.

I know of the insurance difference and the performance difference and the looks too.

But does opting for the faster and more expensive japanese wrx make more sense then its uk brother ?.

I will be using the car to do town driving and b road jaunts on a regular basis along with the daily school run if that helps on your views.

I and my ms and my 3 boys of who are at primary school [They all love cars] love the flat four sound so thats the reason for our choice of car.

Modifications will consist of a decat straight through exhaust/dump valve and compmotive white th alloys with some suspension work so it sits nicely.

Any views will be welcome.

Forget the dump valve, Subarus don't like them unless you use a recirculating one (which doesn't make the loud noise you're probably looking for).

Personally I'd go for the WRX, with the turbo 2000 you'd probably end up wanting to modify it to WRX power levels (or more) anyway.

That's the ticket, blame the purchase on the kids! wink

You mention you know the insurance difference but have you tried to scope out the cost / difficulty of getting an import insured? I had loads of trouble and it was getting really expensive, thankfully I have fleet insurance at work that is cheap, allows me to pay monthly at no extra cost and covers me for the ring (woohoo).....er I digress....

Anyway car wise the WRX is the easy choice. If you are going to mod why are you ruling out the STi? its a better base?

Them pesky kids!.

It's there fault!.

Cost really is my only reason for saying non sti.

Obviously the sti's cost more and i know insurance is a tad higher.

My brother owns a proven 340 plus bhp 04 blob eye wrx so i'm used to the power and i rarely have a spin in it every 6 weeks or so.

But another question i forgot to add was in the fuel consumption between turbo 2000 and jdm wrx and a sti ?.

It is noticeable ?.

I will be cruising it along 95% of the time and 5% bit of hooning.

Would that change your opinions ?.

My budget would be 2k if that helps.

I was going to write a long and detailed answer, but 2k rules out anything of value IMO. Any Impreza at that value is a big risk. You may be lucky and get a good-un, but you are equally as likely to get an eBay special that blows up 10 miles down the road.

If you do stick with the £2k budget try and buy one off a dedicated regional Subaru forum so that is has a known searchable history matey...and if you are not mechanically minded to Subarus bring along someone that knows their stuff !!!

Don't get me wrong, it pleases me you're considering a subaru, and I love the brand, but for me the risk of a duffer at that price point would be far too high.

if it were me i would rather look for a uk 2000 turbo with ppp, that way you will be able to find a car with proper history and properly undersealed, but for £2k you wont find one unless it has silly mileage. if you can stretch to £3k you will have a much better range of cars to pick from and finding one with a good history is the sensible idea. a £2k one could end up costing more than a £3k one after a good looking over and servicing/brakes etc.

Oh and one thing I forgot to say, not related to pricepoints: don't get suckered into automatically believing JDM Subarus are more powerful than their UK equivalent just because the bhp figures are higher. They may well be if there are significant mechanical differences (which there can be), but JDM figures are usually produced using Jap high RON rocket fuel, whereas the UK ones are often quoted using 97, sometimes 95 RON, so just take a step back and check yourself for a mo if you can.

Anyways, good luck matey.
