Scooby Questions
Discussion
Evening,
I'm currently driving a Focus ST3 which i'll be selling shortly.
In the absence of anything exciting left in the ford range I was thinking of getting a Scooby to keep for while and release a bit of cash.
Ultimate spec for me would probably be about £6k's worth of WRX SL PPP in estate guise.
Any other fast stealthy specs i should be aware of?
I don't need it as a daily driver so fuel consumption isn't a massive worry however my driving is split into two types: hoon or motorway slogg which unfortunately i do quite a lot off in my spare time.
The big question is what mpg achievable on the motorway at a steady 85mph (preferred cruising speed (in Europe))????
Its currently about 30mpg in the focus which makes up for the diabolical consumption when blasting around and also means I generally get over 300 miles to a 55gallon tank.
Following on from that; is the 2.5 engine any more economical / are there maps out there which will give you a economy setting? I've heard they run pretty rich.
I predict the answers are don't buy one if your worried about fuel consumption - it was the same with the Focus, i'm just trying to find out realistically what it'll cost to run. If its vaguely sensible on fuel when cruising then its pretty much an ideal car and will save me from a 330d touring.
Fast for hoons, practical for snowboard and ski's and bikes, little bit different, 4x4 for the alps, reliable. Winner
Cheers

If you can find WRX SL sportwagon with PPP in excellent condition and low mileage for £6K then go for it.
If the difference between a used car with PPP and without is significant enough then i would think about an unmolested car that just requires a decat uppipe, final cat delete, decent high flow flat panel air filter, snorkus delete and Open Source remap. It will make a very practical and quick car, and a good looking estate IMHO. You should see anywhere from 250-300mpt depending on how you drive it.
If you go the 'Mod Your Own' route then ask the mapper to concentrate on more torque than power. The more torque you have the quicker the car will be and the less gas pedal effort required for the same effect. 310-320ft/lb torque and 270bhp is not unreasonable and very doable. The TD04 turbo spools really early and quickly with some skillful mapping, and will make some really decent torque from low down.
That will make it a nicer car to drive every day.

To me my 2004 2.0 WRX is a brilliant all-rounder.
IMHO - Probably nicer to live with day to day than an STI, softer springs & smaller turbo (less lag)
Driveable round town, great on the twisties, and refined enough on the motorway(as long as you haven't got a silly loud exhaust)
I get about 26 mpg on my daily commute, and can get 30ish mpg on a motorway run sitting at 85-90mph (In Europe of course)
I just don't know what I'm gonna replace it with when the time comes, the value for money & all round ability is hard to match.
P.S. - Was also fantastic in the snow this year being 4X4, had no issues getting to work, whilst BMW's and Mercs were left floundering.
P.P.S. - Has also been 100% reliable, this car has never let me down in any way !!

I would say it will be about the same mpg as what you get at the moment, perhaps slightly worse on the motorway. My STI PPP wouldn't get 30mpg at steady mway speed, more like 25 I guess, but I understand non-STI would be better. I have heard that PPP runs rich, but I'm no expert. As said above, if mpg is your thing, probably best to avoid PPP, and if you want the power, get it remapped yourself.
Have you tried convincing yourself that 4x4 will be safer in winter, you won't crash so the Impreza is cheaper that the 330d in the long run ? It worked for me :-)

I had an 05 WRX PPP and managed 380 miles per tank when doing a big motorway run providing I stuck to a steady 70-80MPH (I do a lot for work – 20K miles a year!). Push it above that speed and you gradually see the MPG drop. For B road fun then it depends how you drive it, but you can empty a tank pretty quick! Handling wise I had epic fun in it, and it was in a different league compared to my previous Focus ST170.
I now have an STi which again is another step up, both in terms of fun and fuel consumption. It seems that no matter how I drive it the fuel burns up at the same rate. I have to say, that the STi is a better car (obviously), but people do overate the real world difference between them. A WRX with a decent exhaust and a remap will keep you smiling all day.
Not sure you will get a great new age WRX with PPP for your budget, at least on a newer plate and certainly not a 06+. Perhaps 03/04 with reasonably low miles.

When I was commuting 80miles of motorway a day in the 2.0turbo Forester i was averaging 27mpg. Which is what I would expect from a wrx wagon.
If it's any consolation I used to take my 400bhp STI Impreza every Friday. And that would only give 21mpg.
They are not fuel efficient car TBH.
Just damn good value and consistent to drive in all Weathers.

Sorry for the tardy response. Thanks for all the replies.
Sounds like the MPG isn't as bad as i thought it would be.
The PPP package is appealing for the extra power and peace of mind thats its a Subaru product.
I can see they advantages of a DIY tuning job however they have two drawbacks to me 1) Insurance - i assume its easier to get a PPP insured. 2) Resale value.
Any comments on those would be good, being able to tune it to my desired spec does sound attractive though.
FYI i was thinking along the lines of this http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2128881.htm
I would consider spending more for the 2.5 if it was going to make a big difference to fuel consumption.
The budget is fairly flexible i just want something that i will a) Enjoy b) Not cost a fortune to run which should ensure c) I don't want to sell it after 6 months. (My record so far is 9months).
Cheers

I don’t think there is a great deal of difference with fuel consumption between the 2.0 and 2.5. If anything I would imagine the 2.5 to be slightly more thirsty.
Insurers recognise the PPP as a complete package making it easy to insure. However, I have had no problem declaring the equivalent PPP bits on my new Impreza with Elephant and have only had to pay 20 or so pounds. I always keep the original bits so I can set it back to standard before I sell it (the only problem being if its been remapped, which mine has not). For what its worth the PPP makes a huge difference to the WRX, so either get one with it on already, or do the mods yourself. As far as resell goes, I don’t think simple mods such as a de-cat centre and new exhaust will make a huge difference, especially on a cat that age etc.

If you keep your eyes open. you can get one, for around £4000k with around 60k miles. I have my eyes on a black one at the moment. 90k miles though for £3995, not saying where it is advertised, as i will be putting a deposit down later this week.Sounds like the MPG isn't as bad as i thought it would be.

I have a 2.5 wrx with ppp and have made some minor mods, which when rolling roaded made 293bhp and 360lbft, so it makes for a really driveable car (Paul has been in it and thought so). The issue with ppp is that it is a standard map and often doesn't make the power that is quoted. I would go for a non-ppp wrx, which should be cheaper and spend the savings on some minor mods and a remap. Gary Moulson at Keith Michael can offer an awesome deal on impreza insurance and seemingly insures half of the members of all the subaru forums in the uk

Neils car is phenomenal to be honest… the in drive torque is incredible!
Having driven both 2.0 and 2.5 (WRX’s and STi’s) when buying my recent car, my views are:
1) The 2.5 is an easier car to live with and feels more mature.
2) The 2.0 is livelier and louder and for me is the better car, but that is entirely personal. Mine lives in the garage and gets ragged round Chippenham etc on the way to my Nans – who seems to get lots of visits now days
3) For a daily driver where you need to do any kind of mileage then an STi is a non-starter - a WRX PPP is a much better proposition.
For mods, then you need to be careful. A WRX PPP will only be a few hundred quid more than a standard WRX and you wont be able to get the bits for the difference in price. A re-map can cost 600 quid, then you need to add an exhaust, de-cat pipe etc on top, which even if you get from eBay will cost 150 pounds or more. However, if you plan to go beyond a PPP then get a standard WRX and commit more money to your mod pot.

Stealth, performance, comfort, economy, £6kish, Subaru AWD - considered a Forester...? Something like this maybe:
