I currently have a Celica VVTLi T Sport and have made a few mods (Blitz induction kit, Blitz back box, EBC pads, Grooved discs and soon to add 18s), however as lovely as it looks, the performance just doesnt match, it is great through the twisties but thrashing the engine to get the most out of it is starting to get a bit annoying.

Therefore I am thinking of buying something different next year and my obvious choice is an Impreza (03+) and have been looking at various WRX STis, like the one below, however is this going to cost me a small fortune to run?

Also, any other cars worth checking out for around £9k?

I'm horribly biased, but £9K would get you a top notch Celica GT-Four with plenty of change for further modifications...

or just buy a car that is great out of the box rather than throwing money at a car worth £3k.

Sorry guys but the GT4 is not for me, I want something newer and nicer. thats why i chose the gen7 over the gen6 originally, it just feels more modern inside. If I was happy to buy an older car, I would be looking at the RX7 or Supra TT, but I want something from the last decade.

That’s a good car, and he is a good dealer. I bought a 05 WRX off him 2 years back, and recently bought an STi off him. An STi is epic fun, however, they do drink petrol if driven hard… I have made a few mods to mine including an afterburner exhaust, which really does make some racket! Service costs are reasonable, and there are plenty specialists about (no point using a dealer for a car like that).

05 STi UK car with DCCD would be an excellent choice. failing that perhaps a 2003/2004 JDM (Import) STi would be an great alternative, and will have DCCD unlike pre-05 UK cars.

A Driver Controlled Centre Differential. It's a device that enables you to say how much drive is transferred to the rear wheels. Think it goes from 50/50 to almost all. Scoob owners can be more precise. smile

ETA: I would definitely chop the Gen 7 for an STI any day of the week. Toyota made an OK car with the Gen 7, but dropped a major bk not putting a turbo AWD model in the line up. I would have had an STI, but one of the spec/colour/options/mods I would have wanted was too expensive for me and I didn't want the misunderstood image that comes with an Impreza, so I opted for an older (and IMO classier biggrin ) homologated vehicle that still ticked all of the driving boxes at a cost that I could afford and still get one in good nick. I don't mind that it has an older interior, i'm not looking at the vents or the switchgear when I am driving, but I know I have a nice smile every time I drive it. People also seem to recieve it better IME, which can only be a good thing.

As you've said, a GT Four ain't for you, so I would get an understated STI (perhaps a wagon? Did they do an STI in wagon format? confused ).

Good luck with your search and subsequent ownership! thumbup

From 1996ish until the Version 7 (bugeye) they did, but not after that.

MPG on my WRX PPP was about 35-38 on the motorway, and god knows what on the B roads. My STi is about 27-22MPG on the motorway (how you achieve 34MPG, the claimed figure, is a mystery!), and on the B roads - well, I did a tank of petrol in 120 miles last Saturday visiting my Nan in Norfolk!

If your concerned about MPG, then I would seriously consider a WRX with PPP. That’s still a very quick car (in a straight line its not that much slower than an STi), and still very competent on the country lanes.

Based on that i think i will definitely look into the WRX PPP, 22-27 would be quite a jump down from the celica, thanks

It doesn't matter if you buy a WRX or STi, if you are really bothered in any way about MPG or it's a major issue then it's the wrong car for you. Get yourself an oil burner!!

I keep seeing these threads asking about MPG on turbo Subarus and i think the same things every time. Why bother asking, it's a super-high performance car!! Ask how quick they are, ask about how they handle, are they reliable, any common issues or faults, but MPG.....FFS!! rolleyes

Imprezas are as quick or quicker than many exotica. I've rarely seen a thread on Porsche, Ferrari or Lamborghini forums asking about how many MPG the car will do. Potential owners already have an inkling that these cars can be hyper-thirsty and rarely give more than 15-20MPG generally. Thirsty goes with the territory and it's exactly the same thing for Subaru.

Apologies if i sound terse but i am tired of seeing the same MPG threads popping up time and again. It's appreciated the cost of fuel is becoming prohibitively expensive but even if the cost of fuel was considerably cheaper i doubt these threads would appear any the less.

Forget about Subaru and MPG, the two don't go together. Think more in terms of Subaru and performance....pleeeeeease!!!!!! smile
