Charade gtti gearbox

Hello everyone,

I'm looking to buy a charade GTTI and have been for quite a while now and found that they are pretty darn hard to find now days. However I've found a charade GTTI that needs the gearbox replacing. I'm new to charades so I'm not sure whether its hard or easy to change the gearbox and whether of not charade gearboxes are hard to find.
Any advice or help would be much appreciated

I bought one that needed new big ends and it was a bd to get parts for. Brake calipers and discs were expensive too.
Best advice is shop around, you may find somewhere that has an imported gearbox. Doubt it will be cheap though.

I have a couple of GTti s my self and the box's can be delicate enough when there dogged or too much power put through them, also a standard petrol box or diesel one for that matter won't work because the drives are not equal length as in the GTti and also have smaller cv joints, there's a guy in Marlborough Nathan munns I think who is big into them google him he might have something for you. Marf is also into em if I remember correctly, anyway enough ranting from me hope you get sorted.

Now onto the box issue, replacing a box is not a problem, they are relatively easy to change but finding one may be more of an issue.

As RB51 says you can only use a GTti box given the driveshaft arrangements.

The car you have posted up is not a GTti in any way shape or form. The GTti is a twin cam 12valve 3pot running EFI. The Charade Turbo is a single cam 6valve 3pot with a carbeurator.

The CB70/80 engine in the GTti is far stronger and more tunable than the 6v turbo lump, not to mention much much stronger.

The GTti engine can take pretty much whatever you throw at it assuming correct mapping and sufficient cooling. They are very strong engines out of the box. The box is less of a sure thing, usually falling over as you get towards 150lb/ft of torque.

My advice would be to hold out for a running car.

It is worth bearing in mind what others have said about parts. There were only roughly 700 cars sold into the UK, and when I sold mine 2.5 years back there were only 100 cars left.

Camskill can supply many parts, and Westaways Daihatsu up in scotland are a friendly dealer who I used to get parts from.

They are great fun and almost totally unknown these days which makes for a great sleeper factor, however, as much as I love the GTti a Starlet Turbo may be a better option.

Thanks for all the info, unfortunately the car has sold but marf I think ill take your advise on waiting for a running car even if its quite a rare thing to find

I looked at a starlet before and I quite like them tbh, but they don't float my boat anywhere near as much as a GTti

I know what you mean, they are a little more special than a Starbo. Plus they sound pretty good at 9000RPM with 25psi blowing through 'em.
