Help!!
The 'Check Engine' red warning light has been coming on intermitently on my '96 - 2.0Litre Legacy Est, for a coupla weeks
I've changed :-
Oil & filter
Air Filter
Fuel Filter
Plugs & Leads
Alternator Belt has correct tension
and still the light comes on.
There are no fuel/oil/or Water leaks, & I've run out of ideas as to the causeconfused
Anyone else experienced this, and how did you cure it [without removing the warning light bulb]biggrin
>
Apart from the 'Check engine' warning light the car runs nicelysmile

You need to read the code and find out what is causing the CEL

I'm guessing the following would work for a legacy

Maybe a dumb Q - but how, where, & what equipment do I read the codes?

The links above tell you confused

Under the steering column on the centre console side there are a pair of black connectors. Connect them together and then turn the ignition to on (don't actually start the car).

The check engine light will start flashing, a number of long flashes followed by a number of short ones. Long flashes are 10s, short flashes are 1s. So for example if you get 2 long flashes followed by 2 short ones that's code 22 (knock sensor failure), which is what my car is showing at the moment rolleyes

It'll display all the stored codes and then loop round to the first one again.

Remember to undo the connectors again when you're done smile

Many thanks for the great reply.
I couldn't access the links posted by the first replier, because I only have a dialup INet connection.
I'll try the method you suggest, and post up the results.
once again many thanks

the long and short flashes are veryy quick so I might be 1 outsmile
Thanks for posting up the code meanings but what/where is a knock sensor?
there are several possibilites for 5-3 does 5-3 in combination with eother of the others mean anything?

We've had an intermittent CEL on the Impreza since we got it. Still keeps going and passing MOTs, so whatever it is doesn't seem to be doing much harm!

Yeah mine keeps coming on. I think it is the knock sensor. I will replace it one day, what is the torque setting when doing it?

God knows what 53 means but it might be linked to the knock sensor. A knock sensor allows the ignition timing to be advanced for more power/economy but prevents pinking/detonation.

Give import car parts a call on 01388 834204. The knock sensor on their site for your car is also £55

For you car the manual says 24 N·m (2.4 kgf-m, 17.4 ft-lb)

Have a look here http://www.subaru-car.ru/imp1/imp01_sec1_1.pdf

Done some more research on this mysterious Knock Sensor [KS] apparently its a piezo electric sensor connected to the ECU - It's possible to check whether the KS is faulty by removing it and measuring the resistance accross the terminals this should be around 560kilo-ohmssmile According to both the Chiltons Legacy workshop manual and the well thought of USA based 'Mitchell on demand System' service schedule.
Interestingly though neither of these list the fault codes mentioned and listed above
KS seems easy to get at so will try this to-morrow, and checking the connections of KS at the same time. Piezo crystal sensors are noted for their reliabilty, so maybe it's simply a bad connection.
Thanks for everyone who's contributed to my post, if anyone knows or can guess at what the 5-3 code means - I'm listeningbiggrin

Correct me if I'm wrong but surely if you have a knock sensor light coming on intermittently it could be that you have actually got detonation occurring? Try running it on V-power (if you don't already) and see if the problem goes away.

Mine was the knock sensor when mine come on (also intermittently), I was away on a course at St Athan at the time and cacked myself that it would knacker the engine if I kept going. Turned out it was a faulty sensor rather than wrong detonation, which is good as I only run it on V-Power.
Hope you get it sorted.

it looks like a little doughnut with a lead and connector attached, it will be secured with a single bolt through the ring/hole of the doughnut. it is where the video suggests.
