Just a quick one - i quite fancy an Impreza STI but cant get the wing past her in doors - too boy racer apparently, each to their own i suppose! Anyway was wondering if the Spec D is the same as a STI?

Also quite like the new shape hatch but most articles give it the thumbs down - is this really true for everyday driving or just when taking it to the limits on a track?

Cheers in advance.

The Spec-D is an STi without the visual stuff, i.e. it looks like a boggo WRX.

The Spec D is mechanically the same as the standard STi. I think the differences are just visual and include a small spoiler, fog lights at the front, leather interior and silver wheels. You could get a standard STi and then get a spoiler on eBay (there are always loads of WRX spoilers where people have changed them). Getting wheels reconditioned to silver is not too expensive either.

The only thing I notice with the Spec D is they tend to be higher milers compared to the same age standard STi’s. Also the guy I bought my STi off reckoned the seats in the Spec D were not all that comfortable, however, others may say different and I have never been in one.

I think the big thing with the hatch is the look and the lack of a decent exhaust note (at least with a standard exhaust). The latter can probably be sorted with a decent aftermarket exhaust, but I guess that depends on taste (I have a proper ear-bleeder on my STi wink.

thanks for the response - i disnt think about swapping over the large spoiler for small, simple things eh!

I presume moonraker you are more than happy with your STI?

I'm driving an s type r at the mo so a big change for me, i also have a little nipper on the way so am hoping the STI will cater for all my space needs?

Personally, I would tell the misses I planned to change the spoiler, then when I finally got the beast home think up some other job she wanted doing and use that as a deferral tactic... In time hopefully she would eventually forget about it, or move on to something else wink ... Although, if you had to relent you would easily be able to sell the STi one on eBay for a good price.

As far as my STi goes - I love it... I tried both the newer MY07 2.5ltr and the MY05 2.0ltr, and decided on the 2.0ltr in the end (which you will have the choice of doing if your drop the need for a Spec D)... The 2.0ltr just gave me a bigger grin!

When it comes to kids - no drama at all... I have 1 year old identical twin girls and they are more than happy in the back in their car seats. The boot fits the double buggy plus all manor of other crap that you need, and when it comes to holidays its just out with the roof box and a little (yeah right) drop in MPG...

I mean - look - the roof box makes the car right biggrin

I test drove a Spec D two and a bit years ago and adored it - comfortable, great handling, stupendous performance. Unfortunately at the time I decided I couldn't justify 14k and spent 8k instead on the "poor man's Spec D" (a WRX SL with PPP) which was great but not the same thing at all.

Spec D? Go for it . . .

I got tons of flashes and waves driving along smile To be honest, I felt a bit uneasy hammering it though, given the whistles and creaking sounds I could hear... One of my mates reckoned it looked like that plane that launched the first space shuttle!

Not sure she wears the trousers, just a clash of the large wing / spoiler image thing and if i can avoid that by going discreet then so be it, oh and not forgetting she will part own it - its a miracle i've got this far!!!

I still think that the deferral tactic is the order of the day wink ... I just went out an bought mine, then hid it in the garage.... I then spent 3 weeks convincing Christina that it was better for the kids if she got the bus... more social or something I think I said at the time... How naive of me thinking that just because it was the same colour as the WRX she would not notice the gold wheels and picnic table on the boot...

On a more serious note – if you do need to change the spoiler, just make sure you are not going to be left with any holes, and if so that you can get rid of them somehow (maybe change the whole boot lid – I am sure a WRX owner on a forum would be up for that).

What he said about the holes in the boot. I think the standard spoiler is bolted down in either 6 or 8 places where the WRX spoiler is bolted down in 4 and not over the area where the other bolts would be IIRC.

100% there would be someone, probably local, who is willing to swap boots and spoilers with a bit of cash your way. The spoilerless look seems to be the big thing at the moment though. I do like it but i have to admit, i love the big wing/mini wing combo!!

The wife wasnt too happy with me putting the wing on though, she thinks it spoils the car, but who the hell cares. After a couple of weeks she just forgot about it and found something else to complain about, thats how women are.

I've had my Spec D for 3/4 months now and it's excellent. All the STI power, brakes, adjustable diff etc but doesn't look too 'obvious'

If you were more local I'd offer you a demonstration of a Spec D smile

Am I right in thinking that you're into the £425 odd for road tax territory with the STI ?

I do fancy a late Spec D to replace my WRX, but prefer the £245 Road tax and the 26 mpg I'm currently getting.

The road tax went up around June 2006. My STi is MY05 and 245. If you get an 06 plate spec d then you may be okay, however, the engine might fall to bits (I hear the first 2.5s had some problems).
