Subary Legacy/Legacy Outback automatics: reliable?
Discussion
Daft question of the week, coming up!
On the hunt for a new car, with the Impreza wagon, Forester, Legacy Tourer and Outback top of the list. I'm no Japaholic (more your Alfa fan), but for whatever reasons, they're what I'm looking at.
Whilst not after an auto, there're a darn sight more 3.0 Legacys with said 'box, and for Outbacks, it's the only option.
My q. is, are the automatics (let's assume 06-onwards, 3.0 cars with the 5-speed 'box) reliable, and are they any good? A few times now I've seem "Weak/etc automatics" for other cars, but so far, nothing against Subarus.
As for how good the 'box is, reviews seem so-so, although obviously only a test-drive can properly answer that. The only auto I've goof experience of is a Jag XF, which is just beautiful. Maybe I'm setting my sights a bit high...

We have an 07 Outback 3.0RN Auto. Its a very nice car to drive, more limo than sports car or SUV. So far it has been very reliable. The Box is reasonably basic, no where near as slick as the Auto in my A6 in terms of different maps for different settings and its only a 5 speed. But for the nature of the car I think its excellent. Fuel economy isn't excellent circa 23-25mpg average on ours, going up to 30mpg on a motorway run.On the hunt for a new car, with the Impreza wagon, Forester, Legacy Tourer and Outback top of the list. Its the wife's car and she loves it (replaced a Leon Cupra). Its not a Jag XF (mind you I hated that compared to the Audi A6).
The car is very well put together, certainly its better screwed together than the Audi, it all feels very solid like German cars used to be. Not the most modern in electronic trickery. Very good off road for something thats not a full off roader and as they normally wear all season tyres they are quite good in the snow.
For our purposes at the moment would we want to change it?......No. Plus its accepted everywhere many of the very rich folk around here run them, and it works as well pulling up at Claridges as it does on the school run or towing a horsebox.
There is an issue with the circa 98/2004 Outbacks where they fail to go into D properly, sort of a lazyness, sometimes doesnt go into until it revved. Its an internal seal issue & is a major fix of £££££'s so car is effictively written off or very cheap.
You do see manula outbacks though they are quite rare
