Hi,

I have a rather unexciting '03-plate Nissan X-Trail (manual) with a 2.2l turbo diesel engine - although I do use it to tow the race car so I guess its partly exciting!

Oh right - the problem! Ok so in general driving it feels 'fluttery' on the throttle; if I maintain constant small-throttle, the car often behaves like I'm all over the place, losing/gaining power. Not always enough to be noticeable but definitely happening

But I think that is a symptom of the main problem; randomly, while driving along, sometimes the throttle response will just cut out and the engine will idle. Even putting in neutral and flooring it results in just very very little rev increase.

Pulling over, stopping the engine, waiting 5-10 seconds and starting up again makes it all fine again (until the next time). Just stopping for 1-3 seconds does not.

Its only happened 5-6 times so far, but its becoming more frequent. I've spoken to Nissan and a number of local garages previously but noone has much idea what it might be.

I also can't see any correlation between fuel level, temperature, speed, whether the engine was started hot or not, electrical load (e.g. night with lights on vs daylight) or anything else.

The only thing is that it tends to happen when driving at roughly constant speed with little throttle input.

Anyone any ideas? Any/all help greatly appreciated!

cheers

Shane

Probably one of the many sensors you will have malfunctioning - MAF, O2, Idle...could go on and on. If there's no error codes or lights coming up on your dash then think about taking it to a dealer to have it plugged in.
Sorry I don't have any specific knowledge to your vehicle, but having a turbo-charged car myself it does sound like something to do with a problem reading the airflow going through the car somewhere.

thanks - appreciate the input.

I'm inclined to agree - its booked into a 'diesel fuel injection specialist' tomorrow...lets see what they come up with...

Meh, they couldn't find the problem frown Nice people, and were up front about it (and only charged one hour's labour despite having spent much longer than that on it). They even asked that we let them know what it was if we ever find out...

Best they can come up with is that it might be the fuel pump, injectors or a "suction valve".

Think the car might be going bye-byes sometime soon...

Thanks for your help anyway smile
