A cheap 53 plate as come up but I know these cars have many issues to look out for (compression etc) so are there any tests I could do to make sure it won't instantly die on me? 35k miles so barely used (which I know is a bad thing on these).

There are quite a few (ALOT) of threads on this were previous owners have commented and those that know have also given opinions..

Depending on the way the previous owner has maintained it, they're quite delicate about the ignition system.. Coils/Plugs/Leads, if one of these fail they'll usually take out the other two, and this can knock on and cause the CAT to fail too. But, well maintained ones, serviced on time and properly they're a good car.

You mean you have read they use a lot of oil.
They are designed to use oil as its a wankel engine, but its not a lot, in fact my Dads used less than my Celica and about the same as my Prelude.
Listen to people who actually own and run RX8s and not pub talk.

I got one for my Dad. Check starting, run it and get it hot, stop it and check it re starts OK. Also check for warning lights.
See if you can get one having had the coils changesd as at that milage its about ready.

I agree, Probably not all owners are thorough with checking oil but I think that applies to any car.
A girl at our work was having snags with her vectra, I dipped the oil and there was a greasey oily substance on the end. She said, "well it was serviced last year"yikes
