Reconditioned gearbox.....questions
Discussion
I need some advice from the PH massive.
I own a bug eyed WRX wagon (2001) which has always been a dream to run. However, last week the gearbox decided to 'let go'. The car has 50,000 miles on the clock (I've owned it from new) and although I have driven it like all Subaru owners do, enthusiastically, I've never been mechanically unsympathetic to it, i.e. ragging it from cold or bouncing off the red line.
The local official Subaru dealer has quoted a price of a new gearbox at £2,300, which as far as I'm concerned is out of the question when considering the book value of the car (although the car is absolutely immaculate). So the only other option is obviously a reconditioned box, which they have quoted a price of £1,750 (without fitting).
So what I would like to know is - does anyone have any info on reliability? Are they as slick as the factory fitted ones? Basically I just need as much information as possible before I make such a large outlay of cash.
P.s. the car has a full service history and the box went without any warning whatsoever.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You can get a box for one of those for less than £500, won't be reconditioned but there is really no need for it to be.
1K + for a wrx box is just a rip off.
Where would I get hold of a box for less than £500 and what condition would it be in? The only appealing aspect of a recon is that I get 1 years warranty. I am assuming the box you are suggesting would come without a warranty(?) Thanks for your advice.1K + for a wrx box is just a rip off.
