Bought a 96,000 mile 2005 Outback on Saturday. This one in fact:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

Love the car but the only thing that's got me thinking is that it's got 3 different brands of tyre - and browsing the Legacy forums last night, helpfully post purchase - someone posted that this can cause problems with the diff.

Just wondered if this was anything to take seriously, or just enjoy a good car for what it is.

Cheers.

Its a recommendation for all AWD cars I think. Anyway, I guess you need to be realistic - how long has a 96K car been running odd tyres? Will changing them now make a difference?

I should imagine uneven wear is just as bad...

I have never heard of anyone actually have problems with their diff due to different tyres despite all the warnings on forums.

Regardless of diff problems it will make handling "interesting". wink Tyres should really be replaced in pairs (ideally same brand front and rear) so make sure you put some good rubber on pronto! smile

A mate of mine worked for Subaru and I asked this exact question of him following another friend having a blowout on his Impreza. He told me that the Subaru 4wd system is very simple, agricultural were his exact words, and as such could run with a mix of worn tyres happily.

It may not casue damage to the diff but handling won't exactly be the best with different tyres on every corner.

The AWD system in the older subarus, is very agricultural. It would take a lot more than mismatched tyres to cause an issue. The latest electronicy one is a different story rolleyes
