Im surprised that no one has suggested an Impreza.
Even the boggo standard 'soft' uk versions have over 200bhp and 5.3sec 0-60. For the same price that you'd pay for an Evo of any year, you will net a newer car as they are more plentiful. And servicing will be cheaper as the EVO4 GSR onwards will require a diff re-torque every 4.5kmiles. (Its not something you can easily do yourself, unless you have very small hands).
Best advice though is drive both over a range of different surfaces including lumpy potholes and motorway.

Forget the newage scoobs, lardy in weight and nowhere near as good to drive as a classic, imports will be few and far between quality wise, but they are out there to be found, and you won't regret it, plus you'll have some cash left to play with it a bit.
Very balanced... I am sure there are some good points about my gowd awful 2005 car...
At £5000, you could buy a good example of almost any Japanese performance car with a few years on it, but still in excellent condition, bar perhaps Nissan 350/370Zs and Skylines. It just depends on what takes your fancy, but I think I could be tempted by a Celica, they look incredible. That one up there looks like a really, really nice one, if I had the cash I'd have it myself!

It's a fair cop. There is an other on the owners club for £3500 with a forged engine so you can get a nice for 5 bags of sand.
Good choice though I've always thought the Skyline saloons good buys but many are auto's limiting tuning down the road. Mind you £5k will buy a very very nice R33 GTST nowadays Gassing Station | Japanese Chat | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
