Posted this in GG, but thought I might get more specific answers in here. smile

I've recently bought an Outback and when I reverse on full lock there's a fairly quiet knocking or clicking sound - it also feels like I'm driving over a small stick.

I'm also reversing up a slight gradient, and it happens first thing in the morning usually when the engine's cold. Not sure this makes any difference, but just thought I'd mention it.

Underway, there's no knocking to be heard.

Anyone got any clues as to what it might be?

Cheers smile

My STi does this when I reverse out of my garage (gradient) and apply full-lock. Just like you are driving over a stick.

Yay. biggrin I think. That sounds reassuring.

Has it always done it?

Only when very cold (like when it snowed)... Not when warm... I am not worried about it at all...

This is totally normal. I felt a bit of a dufus calling the dealer who replied that its the diff unlocking when placed at full lock in reverse.
