From my classic subaru to a 1.0 VAG
Discussion
I am about to change my car, and I am wondering if anyone has had any positive experiences, or am I going to be driven to distraction, literally??!!
I could possibly go for a 1.4 but the reason for the change is that my car hardly ever gets used.
I have also thought about some type of multi car insurance and keeping both cars on the road, but I am trying to be sensible on not let my love for the car rule over my head.
Basically the subaru leaves the drive every morning for the school run, and then sits at home until it's time to do the school run again.
With the price of fuel, and the fact the engine barely warms up, I just want something that is going to be more economical.
I just don't know what to do!

I wouldn't go to the complete extreme if you like your cars. Get a Panda 100hp or at least something that would be good fun on a weekend blast and you wouldn't mind giving the odd clean. Suzuki Swift/Ignis Sport also worth a look. You could service both yourself too so could be nice and cheap to run.
I was joking, mine has done 110K miles so dont think you'd want that.
But I'd def recommend VAG I've had it for over 5 yrs and have driven over 80K miles in it and have never put my hand in my pocket, well apart from the usual wear and tear for a 9 year old car:
Servicing
Exhaust
Brakes
Suspension (potholes!!)
Tyres

I have seen a few swift's and thought they could be an option.

never had anything go wrong with one.
But I have never had anything go wrong with my Subaru either.
I do think that a 1.0L might be to the extreme but I have a company car also that isn't slow.

What you need is a golf GT TDI.
I currently have a 90bhp tdi and it does 55mpg every morning, its a bit slow but it gets the job done.
Yes, that would be great, but as it's only going to be a run around/social car it doesn't really need to much poke.I currently have a 90bhp tdi and it does 55mpg every morning, its a bit slow but it gets the job done.
My children are only 5 and almost 4 so it doesn't need to be big.
Basically it needs to be a reasonable price, and I'm going to be paying a few £££ for a gt tdi.
But if I get rid of the scoob, then I have a bit more £££ to play with.
I would probably be happy with a deisel that has a few extra miles on it as I only do about 3500-4000 miles a year.
I got a diesel Focus for the week day / work hack. Great MPG when its warm, however, rubbish for popping to the shops etc. I would have thought a small engined petrol car would be better... I think 5th Gear did a comparison between petrol and diesel and found that, given the mark-up and additional fuel costs of a diesel, you needed to do 10K+ miles a year to be quids in (I don’t recall the exact mileage they quoted)...
Diesels are a necessary evil

The mark up price isnt going to make a huge difference to me as im not looking for a brand new car.
I am fully expecting that an oil burner is going to be a little more expensive that a petrol of the same age/car.....
But It will still be cheaper to run a deisel.
Insurance up in a week, so will probably stick with what I have. I don't want to rush and buy a car. Just not sensible.

If the engine doesn't warm up does that mean you live within walking distance of the school? Just an idea but if you do, walk to school on the days the weather is ok and then you won't need to change the car for something more economical.
Or get a diesel. What you save on fuel costs will happily pay for the insurance to keep the the Impreza. However you'll then be in my position when the Impreza doesn't get used at all and sits on the drive 24/7.
So yep, my Impreza is up for sale due to non use as a second car, double

.The engine is technically warm, but It literally is warm as I'm just pulling onto the carpark. Thus causing lack or charge to the battery, thus causing me to get stuck in random places like asda car park or shell petrol station!!
It needs regular longer runs to keep her tip top, and I'm just not doing it.
In all honesty I'm thinking of keeping hold until the summer as it will sell easier.
But I am going to advertise it now also.
If it goes GREAT, if not... I get to enjoy it until it does.
