Guys,

My mate has a Japanese Import that still has the limiter in place, now I thought they were limited to 112MPH, whereas his will fly all the way up to 117MPH DEAD and then won't go any faster. Like it hits a barrier at 117MPH.

Is this just because the limiter is set badly? lol

Disagreement between the speedo and the limiter? Often the number shown on the dash is not the speed the car's engine management system thinks the car is going, let alone the speed it is actually going (i.e. the car lies and is probably also wrong)

My MR2T used to hit the speed limiter at 118 (gps). The MX5 hits it at 113 (gps).

What model MX5 have you got, i have a mk1 eunos roadster, and dont really have the balls to take it over 90ish.

A turbo'd mk 2. See profile. Happy to sit at pretty much any speed on the autoba.hn

My standard Mk1 MX5 never quite made it to the limiter redface the turbo one is only limited by gearing, but the speedo still pegs itself at an indicated 180km/h while the car keeps accelerating.

My Legacy goes right off the clock near enough goes to the first stop but it didn't seem to hit a limiter the previous owner said its still in place as its reading in KMH.

The km => miles converter fitted to my GTO on import applied to the limiter, too.
So it's limited to 180 mph - as if!

If thats 117 on the speedo, it's more likely 112 actual.

The limiter on my Cyborg was a screw in the back of the clocks that appeared to create a circuit when the needle hits the stop at 180kph.

Well, no it's not 117MPH on the speedo as that runs in KMH still. The speedo stops at 180KMH but the SatNav reads that as 117MPH.

Your speedos out.

If you understood how the ECU gets its signal, then all would be clear.

So if he were to just CUT his speedo cable then the car would no longer be limited???

Depends on the car and sophistication of the system. my intended point is that the OP has not mentioned the car/model/make/year.

On an early Impreza for example the ECU would report a fault, if you disconnected the cable.

Most mechanical speedo cars with a sophisticated management system have a ecu link that comes from the back of the speedo, to give the ecu the speed signal.*

Other less sophisicated systems that do not need a speed signal, will have a mechanical solution to the cut out, which will probaly work as you have suggested.

Cars with an electrical speedo imput, like later imprezas dont have a speedo 'cable', but have a wire from the gearbox, which you can only disconnect if you have an aftermarket ecu that does not need the speed input.
