seems to be coming from the front nearside suspension. Any ideas on what it is likely to be?

Drop links, or ARB mounting bracket has sheared possibly.

Mine did that, shortly followed by what can only be described as a 'jingling' noise. Front ARB snapped and was draggind down the road.

Although a few quid on ebay for an STI one followed by 30mins of grazed knuckles under the car sorted it (not helped by not having a jack, and squeezing myself under the car on flat ground!)

Do foresters wear their front top mounts? That's another cause of suspension knocking over bumps.

On mine it was the bushes holding the antiroll bar to the chasis, very easy to change

Just replaced one of my springs last week. Only used to knock going over speedbumps at low speed. Had to take the strut off to find out the bottom half of a coil had snapped. check your droplinks, balljoints, ARB bushes first though.

Just back looking into this. Does the Impreza arb fit the Forester?

Yeap IIRC straight swap model year to model year. They will be thicker so you'll get less roll. I'd recommend going for a rear STI ARB, which I think is 20mm. If you up the front but not the rear it will understeer more.
