Hello,

My friend is looking to buy a £5-6k "fun car" for the summer and was playing with the idea of buying a 2000MY+ WRX STI (I'm quite sure that is the model he mentioned - said it was the higher performance one which does 0-60 in 5 or so seconds?).

I've only owned german cars in the main so when he's asking me if they're reliable I told him I'd have to ask the experts on here!

So any pointers? Is it likely to be a money pit at the price point he's looking at?

Cheers

I would be inclined to get a newer WRX PPP, rather than the STI. You will get a nice 2.0ltr MY05 for that money (private sale). Great car, cheaper to run, and without so much of the risk as a higher mileage older STi.

If you can get one than has not been remapped etc then perhaps. But these cars do get fettled with, and if older probably have been through the loop several times.

If you like the STi looks the big wing etc can be had for reasonable money.

Straight line there is not much between a stock STi and a WRX PPP (Prodrive performance pack).

Thanks Paul - really useful to know re PPP.

I'll have a quick look on the net before I go back to him.

Appreciate your help.

PS One other thing, what's the running cost like for a WRX - I wouldn't have thought it would cost more than a M3 to run ?

A WRX is quite cheap to run... A 150 or so for an interim service (at an indy). 35MPG on a run. Brake disks and tyres quite cheap. The PPP is a must, or do the mods yourself (but that will cost more than the difference between a WRX and a WRX PPP).

If it's a fun summer car he's after, he'd be much better off with something like an Elise, MR2, MX5, etc. Scoobies and Evos can be very very quick cars, but unless you need 4 doors and 4WD, there are far more engaging and enjoyable summer cars. IME they do isolate and flatter the driver and you need to be going very very quick to feel that you're getting the best out of the car. They also don't work that well on track either IMO.

If he wants all your round fun, then the Scoob fits the bill nicely though.

totally agree with this... even though I have one... a nice convertable with a good sound and a sweet chassis is great in the summer... with the scooby you need to drive round like your pants are on fire, and typically this causes the other half to moan (or in my case scream) wink

To be honest all he is looking for is a car that can give him that huge "shoved into the seat" feeling - bit of 0-60 straight line type.

He previously purchased my old E46 M3 which was ideal for that (all the power came in after 4k revs) but has moved that on pre-xmas - which he now massively regrets and is looking for a 2nd car which can give him that feel.

I'm assuming that through his analysis the suburu will give him that 'pushed into the seat' feeling?

In no way plugging whistle

My classic STI Wagon is for sale and one of the maps is decidedly old school in that there is nothing, nothing and then BOOOOM! biggrin

It will definitely push you into the back of the seat for a fair whack less than the whole budget.

Not plugging either... wink I am also considering parting with my STi v5 RA Ltd. It's (IMHO) the best special edition "classic" Subaru made. All the car spec details are in my profile. With the short ratio box it's very quick to 60mph, although it's not much good past 130.

The general story is that you can get a lot of performance for little money with these cars if you pick wisely.

here is a quick vid of my classic and it shows the lag, but when it comes on, it is rather nippy.

i would go for a sti over a wrx ppp any day, the engines are much stronger etc. the ppp kit is ok, but you will get better with a custom map

This is a cracking good starting point and blank canvas. If i had the spare spondoolicks i'd be having this pronto for £5.5K. http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/2761530.htm

If this scoob for the money doesn't start you salivating then there is something very wrong with you!!

ETA: I've just read the ad some more as i only caught the first few lines of it. It's already been modified and therefore well worth the money.

i doubt it would be making 330-350 bhp from a remap and a manifold.

I don't think you've read the list of mods properly. Have another look. smile

i thought to achieve that power you needed to change the turbo?

Standard STi VF35 Turbo and 550cc injectors have the potential for 340-350bhp on pump gas (99RON), add methanol and you'll see more.

Don't underestimate the potential Subaru provide out of the box. To go from 265bhp std to +75-85bhp is pretty impressive.

There aren't many turbocharged or supercharged cars out there that allow you to achieve those kinds of results from a remap, air filter/airbox and exhaust mod.

Simples!!
