Hi all,

Perhaps a bit of a noddy question, but when my car (Impreza STi mapped by JGM) has not been used for a while (3 days+) it takes ages to start/catch. By ages I mean 10 seconds or so. For the rest of the day its fine and fires up straightaway. Is this anything to worry about? If it is a problem, what could it be.

Mods include a map, fuel pump, exhaust and panel filter.

i would imagine its simply the battery losing charge via the alarm system, mine used to do a similar thing and then got to the point where the charge would drop so low it would go into a full alarm sequence thinking it was being tampered with, not great at 3am! battery was tired got a new one and its been fine since

Maybe something to do with the fuel pump? Does it prime properly before starting?

I agree with the fuel pump theory. I know a few people who've had a remap on their scoobs, but haven't updated the fuel pump. They have had a similar issue.

But has it being properly calibrated, and matched to the other components?

Might be your spark plugs.

Take them out and see what they look like. If the visible ceramic insulator part of the plug just below the electrode looks red and brown it means they have been running too hot.

I have the same problem with my NGK PFR7B plugs. It takes a few seconds in the morning to start from cold and the rest of the day it's fine, just first thing in the morning.

I looked at my plugs the other day and they have been over heating so i need some colder running plugs, i.e. NGK Racing 8's.

Just take your plugs out and have a good look at them. Could be that simple.

I'll stick my neck out and say i don't think it's got anything to do with your fuel pump.

cool - thanks all... I will take a look at the plugs... The pump should be calibrated properly as the car has been mapped after the mods where made...

Why do the plugs run hot? Is it because the remap perhaps?

Mine is only mapped to 360 and there are times when it gets a sustained good seeing to, after all that's what they are for.

When you're making decent power and you're using that power to it's fullest potential the plugs get very hot very quickly and can overheat the ceramic material. In which case you just move to a colder plug that can run hotter.

For mildly modified cars upto 330-340ish, an NGK PFR7B is highly recommend and won't ever let you down, however for higher powered cars you might take a look at something like the NGK Racing 8. Not cheap though.

I remember that this seems to be common, mainly down to crank sensors I think

I've done a search on Scabbynet and found these

Cool - thanks. I will check the plugs first. It a low mileage car, so they may not have been changed (even thought its an 05).

First start is like a old desiel and if you stop it then start perfect

Have you upgraded the injectors?

Two other things to look out for

ECU temperature sensor (not the temperature Gauge sensor)

Secondly most mappers usauly never have to remap the Cold start program but mine was running extremely rich, they also saw on the log that it had lost temp signal.

I changed the sensor and had cold start remapped jobs a good un wink

Hi Paul, did you ever get to the bnottom of this? I'm suffering similar issues, but have very recently changed the plugs and fuel pump.

Cheers

Its the battery without question... I left the interior light on for 1 night the other day and it drained it! There is a definite trend compared to the amount of time since I last drove it. That said, its going in for a service and coilovers next week so I am getting the plugs checked...

I changed my battery a few weeks ago. I'd not driven it for a week as been on hols but took longer than normal to fire today and also the idle seems to go very low on occasion. No time to do anything before Le Mans so will make sure I get euro breakdown cover.

Hope you manage to get yours sorted.

Doesn't matter if the battery is new. I think it might be the alarm and tracker.

Try using an Optimate when it's parked up.
