Presumably on the grounds that in order to reach my front door he has to climb over a wide range of vehicles in varying stages of decay, my much-loved grandson sees me as the font of all mechanical knowledge.

He has the opportunity to buy a seemingly very clean 94 Delica 2.8td for a non-negotiable £1650.
It's had 1 UK owner since 2004, done 95000kms (hmm) and has a receipt for fuel pump and injectors last year. Its mot expires end Oct with no advisories. There's no tax or radio and a couple of back lenses are cracked. The current owner says the exhaust down-pipe will require replacing "soon".

Given there is every possibility that the previously mentioned grandson knows more about flower-arranging and what colour of crushed velvet would best suit the almost inevitable (and completely unecessary) retrim, and his mechanical knowledge is confined to the stitch-tension adjuster on his (HIS!!) sewing-machine, should I sub-contract the inspection to the AA/RAC or risk the possibility of weapons-grade sulking in about three weeks when something self-destructs or falls off?

Can someone provide me with an idiot's guide to the pitfalls of Delica buying sufficient to give me half a chance of emerging from this with at least a shred of self-respect and a minimal risk of having to stuff his pockets with conscience money when my feet of clay are revealed?

If the purchase goes ahead, are Delicas mappable and to what result?
He intends using it for festivals (although I've no idea what difference that might make).

In return for any help you may give I'll guarantee to prevent him from sticking the "TE" off the back of his current Mercedes Estate on the end of the Delica badge then painting the whole thing Barbie pink.

In spite of any appearance to the contrary this is an entirely serious enquiry which I hope has been read in the spirit it was written.
Any help would be most appreciated.

As above, they are the same chassis and running gear as the Pajero. The 2.8 is a lot better lump than the 2.5 as I believe it has a timing chain rather than belts and balance shaft. I had a 2.8 Pajero for a couple of years and the only problem I had was the cable to the glow plug bus bar broke and the glow solenoid needed replacing which was less than £100.
You should be able to select 4 wheel drive whilst moving up to 50 kph. When selected make sure the two front wheel lights on the display flash for a few seconds and then stay on solid.
Other than that you could go have a nosey on the POCUK or DOCUK forums which are run by the same guy for more knowledge.

Not quite. The Delica has a unitary body and not a separate chassis like the Pajero. All diesel MK2 Delicas used the 2.8 4M40 motor but it is not a straight swop for a Pajero motor as loads of bits are different, the front pump seal problem is the most common though.
Bits are expensive, the fuel comsumption is pretty bad, the handling terrible but generally it's not a bad thing, especially for around £1500.

As a Delica owner I'm rather biased, but they are fantastic vehicles. Great off-road, relaxing and comfortable to drive on-road, loads of space, loads of toys and gadgets. Yes MPG isn't wonderful, and they do have a few common faults but the contacts, information, and how to guides on the MDOCUK site are great and help loads. I'd reccomend a good read though the FAQ's section in the MDOCUK forum, they are a great bunch of people on there. This is my Delilah:
