330d cab vs Nissan GTR?
Discussion
Out for a run with the step dad yesterday round my fav. lanes, sun out, lid down for a fastish blat to demonstrate modern diesel punch (of which he couldn't believe) when out of a side lane, right in front of me pulls a GTR in black-59 plate. Oh, and guns it. I didn't even think sport drive, just floored it. Had an Awsome mile or so of bends and switch backs, and I kid you not, he didn't pull a car length from me! Obviously he assumed he was going to blow me off, then bearing in mind the twisty nature of the road, didn't have his special brown hero pants on so wasn't getting more than 60% out of the car, But even so, you could smell he was gunning it. Got to a straight and he sat at 60 so at that point guessed he gave up playing, and although it was tempting to squeeze past to show the diesel badge and not the M3 badge he was probably expecting, I pulled over to let the old boy have a steer. Needless to say, he loved it. Now it has got an Evolve map, but a heavy cab diesel should have been dropped like a hot rock by a 480bhp 4wd super coupe like the GTR right?
Your right of course, the car should have blown me into next week, but then we were properly tramping on round some tightish lanes. My guess was that he was one of those bloke from 'all the gear-no idea'. You do get people who own proper performance kit, because it is proper performance kit, but fill their pants when it comes to using the performance. Must have been scared I recon!
Remember some years back when I used to have an SP1 (100cc v twin super bike from 10 years ago). Met up with a fella with the then new GSXR100R which had just wiped the floor with my bike in the M/C press.
He had the £1000 lid, top leathers ect, then went for a ride out with him expecting to struggle in the new super bike wake to find a guy who would struggle to keep up with a well riden 125cc bike. There is plenty who aspire to the right kit, dont mean they can use it-

Do you drop the roof on sunny days and pretend you are on a canal boat? Thats what I think about when I imagine a diesel cabrio for some reason.
Cruel..... But true...
To be fair to the OP though I have seen a lot of people at the ring (uk plated cars) who's ability to buy GTRs, 911s etc far out weighed their ability to drive them!

Most canal boat engines don't have many cylinders or much soundproofing. They sound horrid. If you had a BMW 320d convertible, perhaps it would sound like that. For the 330d, the engine has a much smoother sound. I think one of those open-topped London tourist buses might be a better comparison.Fox- said:

Just wish I had a tiller instead of a steering wheel, then I would be living the dream! Might see if I can route the exhaust out through the bonnet so I can get the proper chuga chuga sound with all the soot blowing in my face and dirtying my beard and cardigan.S800VXR said:

Its becoming nigh on impossible to insurance an expensive proper performance car in the uk without the insurance company sticking a 'no nurburgring' clause in the policy, either specifically or in a rounadabout form of words. Therefore its perhaps not ability but the risk of putting £65-£90k of potentially uninsured car in to the armco and being hit with track repairs / closure cost on top. By comparison lower end performance cars and say a v8 saloon seem to miss the restrictive clauses on policies.Well done to OP suggest he should be in F1 if he can extract GTR levels of performance from a diesel 3 series. Oi - Vettel get out of the car, you arent up to the job....
bennno
I have a GTR and can confirm that whilst the car is far quicker than most BMW's, knowledge of a particular road etc can make a big difference in terms of driving at or near 10/10ths. I certainly would never attempt to drive a car like the GTR like a lunatic on roads I did not know however much a local t
t would want to sit on my arse and try to goad me into it. At least it made you feel good about your choice of car, the majority of BMW's are very good cars for what they are.

I'm generally fairly liberal minded and not one for authoritarianism..... but diesel convertibles just shouldn't be allowed, and anyone who makes and sells them should be herded into a canvas-sided lorry, driven into the woods and machine-gunned into a pit.
