Just been told by BMW that I have a crack in one of my wheel rims and they would like £550 for the pleasure of replacing with a new one. It's a 19" M-Sport wheel for the E93.

Where could I get one at a better price - not bothered about it being second hand as long as it's in good nick?

From BMW

For free (sometimes)

you need to get them to do some sort of 'run out test' and then if it says the right thing then they can give you a new wheel. They were in trouble over this a couple of years back and when Watchdog got involved BMW caved in and started paying for the sub standard crap they were selling at high prices.

There's a dedicated number you can ring to persue this (at least there was)

Thanks, I'll do some digging and see what I can find out.

I have asked the BMW franchise to put a claim in to BMW, but don't hold out much hope.

How old car? Where did you buy it from? What caused the crack?

All things to know before giving ideas of how to deal with it.

Car is just over 3 years old, bought from BMW nearly 2 years ago, I have no idea what caused the crack!

I would think that getting the dealership to give a wheel for free is pushing it to the point of it not happening at all.

I would try to find out how the crack happened, and take it from there. If it is was pothole type of issue, I would think there is little you can do. If it is a manufacturing type of issue (possibly highlighted by no other damage to the rim) then BMW might be able to offer some good-will towards a new one - but you need to have a good case for it, and they are under no obligation since it is out of warranty. The Watch Dog item mentioned might be a good starting point, and is pertinent from a quality and safety point of view.

Failing that, if you do not want a new one, perhaps look on ebay, PH or other classifieds.

Which style are your wheels? They are usually assigned a 3 digit code, for instance mine are 19" 313.

Due to the problems described above some older designs are discontinued due to cracking.

If you expect to keep the car a long time, personally I'd replace all 4 wheels for safety.
You can get a complete set from here:

Need to be careful of Ebay because you may end up buying another one with a crack, whether the seller has noticed it or not.

Thanks for the info - I'm currently trying to get some goodwill from BMW as this isn't due to the way the car has been driven, there are no other marks or scratches on my alloys as they haven't been kerbed or driven in an improper way.

Judging by the internet searching I've done it appears to be a known problem so I'm convinced this is a manufacturing defect... so much so that (apparently) BMW will replace the wheel if the crack is less than 2mm... mine is 2.1mm...

Frustrating to say the least!

Quick update for anyone interested...

This is a known issue on the 19" 225 M-Sport wheels. It took me a while and I needed to push it talking to BMW UK but in the end they've agreed to cover the cost of a new wheel under my warranty, I just need to pay the £100 excess.

I'm happy with that.

Good result, and the more cases where they do this re enforces the next mans claim.
