E36 328i for Banger Rally
Discussion
Hello,
A mate and I are doing a Banger Rally to Eastern Europe in September and need a car worth less than £750 to take part. I want a BMW with a 6 cylinder engine. Would also like leather, air and auto as well but that might be pushing my luck!
There is an N Reg 328i E36 Coupe for sale locally that is interesting. It looks absolutely standard, a good thing as far as I'm concerned. Mileage is 155,000 but owner says it has FSH. It's metallic grey with grey leather and std 16" double spoke wheels. No air or stereo and manual box. Only reported fault is LCD check screen fades (acc. to owner). 2 months MOT
He's asking £750 but appears very keen to sell. I'd like any opinions on price and things (apart from the obvious) to look out for on these cars. A quick Ebay search suggests it's one of the cheaper 328i's about and an unmolested one at that.
Overall condition is fair with a few rust spots and scratches. Leather in need of nourishment but not split. Owner wasn't around so I've only had a visual inspection.
If the car makes it back we want to sell it on again so I don't want to end up with something undesirable, no matter how cheap.
So, I know little about E36's other than they are well thought of and would appreicate your thoughts please?
Thanks
Adam

I got my 328i touring manual at 162k miles for £700 (see profile if you're interested).
It's a fair price, and for a banger rally, what more could you want?
Expect 29-30Mpg only, and do check a couple of failure points that could be rally enders - particularly rusty rear brake pipes as they loop over in the front of the rear arches, and a couple of other attention points (front lower arms and rear trailing arm bushes).
All cheap to fix if you've got some skills.
If it's a banger rally, try and buy a less appealing one. I'd say £500 for a 328i saloon, no-one wants them. It's not worth ruining a minter if you're only going to chalkboard it and tie a bra to the wing mirror or wahtever it is you crazy kids do.
Just re-read your post... Re re-sale. Well, A coupe would be ok, but really they tend to either be dead on their rims or worth £1000-£1500 as a base line. As above, check out E34 or even E39 5-series! They're going for peanuts, as is anything with high miles and a big engine. Avoid the E36 Saloon if you will need to sell it on, but again, ebay 99p no reserve or retro rides and you're not going to lose more than a couple of hundred quid so long as it works.

Thanks guys. Depending on what we end up getting will determine what we do with it. If it's a horrible old nail then it might get 'decorated' but if it looks like it might re-sell (touring or coupe) then we'll clean it up and resell.
I have thought about E39's although most seem pushing 200k miles for my budget.
I'll go and check the local one out (esp. the brake pipes!).
Any owners of suitable cars, let me know - ideally not too far from M4 j17!
cheers
