New Car - e36 325 tds OR e46 320d ??

Hi all,
It's time for me to move on to my second car after owning my rover 220 sdi for three years. I tuned my sdi upto 135bhp with 220 ft lb torque, so it doesn't go bad for a first car
now i'm hooked on diesel motors and want something more powerful.
I ideally want a bmw e36 325 tds (mainly as it's got the straight 6), however these cars are few and far between and I'm having trouble finding a nice one. Then I test drove a 320d at work.. which was nice and the fact that there's many more of them for sale made me consider one, so now I've reached a dilemma.. So what the main differences are between the two? how much power can you squeeze out of each? (without spending big money, bigger turbos etc)and what are they like to drive? (better handling/chassis etc)
