E34 central locking question

Is the central locking remote or only by using the key? I I'm currently borrowing and pretty well specced (Seemingly everything bar leather) 1991 535i msport (manual box and even and lsd) and noticed that the key fob has a button on it but doesn't seem to do anything, and the car is unlocked using the key. Was just wondering whether it is supposed to have remote central locking or not.

Is it a BMW alarm? At this vintage, I'd expect to see an led warning light built in to the top vent in the centre of the dash - you should be able to push it down to disable the internal ultrasonics.

Hi, yes there is a red led in the top vent. I'm not having any trouble getting in the car, was just wondering whether it had central locking or not.

My 1997 E34 didn't have remote locking; the button on the key was for the fob light. It still had an alarm with the red flashing LED, think you might have had to turn the key further to set it (and the deadlocks) but it's been a while so my memory may be playing tricks.

My 95 has remote central locking. It's a BMW system, possibly a dealer option? That and the alarm are set with a seperate fob - the button on the key is just an led light as mentioned above.

Remote locking was an option IIRC - mine has a one-button fob that remote locks/unlocks. Also does the nice thing of closing the windows and sunroof when deployed.
