Hello all.

I'm after a nice 5 series and have found one in the spec I'm looking for but it's rapidly approaching 140,000 miles.

I'm currently doing about 18,000 miles a year including miles outside of commuting so would see taht figure rise at about 1500 miles a month.

Am I sailing close to the wind and can expect a big bill at these levels?

David.

Expect big bills for items wearing out, depending on what its already had. I would expect it to require a gearbox/turbo/suspension quite soon.

With the kind of mileage you intend to do it would make more sense to start off with something much fresher - how long do you plan to keep the car?

At least three years.

I'll keep checking for something with that spec and less mileage. I don't like the idea of massive bills early on in ownership.

Is this right of all e60's? I only ask as I've seen a 520 come up locally with 130K on it which would suit us as a family car. We only do around 8K a year.

Would we be consigning ourselves to big bills?

I have had the same dilemma for about 3 months. Do I go for the high mileage (110k-130k) or will they cost me a fortune in the long run? Is it the fact that they are now such complicated machines they are more likely to fail than the older motors? I am going to have to take the plunge soon, I can't run the Alfa for another Winter, it really hates it for some reason!

Our patrol cars were doing 150000 before being sold, with very few problems. They didn't exactly have an easy life.
