Bought a 530i recently, car is good apart from a noise when the car is cold. Engine fires up fine, no untoward noises, but when taking up drive there is a clanking sound until the engine's doing about 1500 rpm. Once I've travelled about half a mile the sound has gone. It seems most likely transmission related, and from the research I've done so far the dual mass flywheel could be the culprit. The clutch judders a bit but engages gear OK and doesn't slip.
The cost of replacing the DMF is quite considerable. If it is the cause of the noise, from anyone's experience can it be left until the clutch needs doing? Or is it causing any damage?
Many thanks.

It certainly sounds like the DMF and anything that is causing jolts and vibration will not be good for the remainder of the transmission.

Change the clutch and flywheel now and start to enjoy the car.
