E36 heater controls

You'll have to stay with like for like.
The older system is analogue and is largely operated via cables. It would be a nightmare to change the setup over for making such a change.
You may have blown the final stage resistor as this is a common fault on these units. What problems are you having?

Or fix it yourself for pennies/free!: http://macadamizer.com/bmwfix.html
I used these instructions to fix My climate control when it started playing up and all it cost Me was @ 45 minutes of My time and that was all!.
I didn't even replace the capacitor as instructed, I merely re soldered the capacitor legs by reheating the original solder to cure the dry joint.(The soldering iron I used was one like this: http://www.maplin.co.uk/battery-powered-soldering-... . Nothing fancy but did the job perfectly).
Follow the instructions exactly as shown and you really can't go wrong!.
If you read the link in the previous post you'll notice it says: "PLEASE NOTE - Away on holiday from 4th June until 11th June, sorry no repairs as not taking the soldering iron!"
So what do you think they are doing that is any different to what it says in the repair instructions in My link?.
I wouldn't be too concerned either by the warning issued in the "DON'T DO IT!" section of that link either.
For one thing, of course they don't want you to attempt to repair your unit yourself because then they don't get £45 for doing a job that costs pennies or even nothing.
As for:
"Around 5% of the units we see have been 'repaired' previously and are un-serviceable, it's very disappointing having to tell the customer that their repair has wrecked the unit, all to save a few pounds."
Where's the proof that it is "their repair" that has made the units "unserviceable"?. The unit may well have been "unserviceable" already due to having a fault that was not the common capacitor problem (hence the reason why the initial repair didn't work).
And should you be unlucky enough to find your unit is "unserviceable", well, they're on ebay from @ £40 anyway so it's not going to break the bank to replace it.

Sorry to highjack but the climate on my 1999 E36 318is has never worked properly. I took it for a regass but the guy said its got a leak so they can't charge it.
Even when the fan is on max. there seems to be very little air being blown into the cabin.
The display is working fine.
Any help would be appreciated.

This is more than likely to be your final stage resistor, or "hedgehog". Even when the fan is on max. there seems to be very little air being blown into the cabin.

When was your pollen filter last changed?
^ ThisMy E36 was 13 years old when I bought it and still had the original* pollen filter in, despite being dealer serviced for well over half of its life. The new filter was white and the old one was absolutely jet black - what little air it did let into the cabin smelled unpleasantly stale, too.
- - For those who are familiar with pollen filter in the E36 with climate control, I had to snap the frame of the original filter at the designated points to remove it whereas, if it had been a replacement, the frame would already have been snapped at the designated points during its installation. So the one I removed must have been inserted at the factory, before the blower unit was installed in the car.
