Afternoon PH

Thought i'd post this up in here as well as the general gassing section.

Just recieved a letter to discuss the renewal of my car insurance for the BMW. I gave them a call to find out how much the renewal was, and bearing in mind I paid £900 for this years policy, he came back with £2850!!!

I just burst out laughing and said thanks but no thanks and rang Adrian Flux, who I have a policy with at the moment with on the Skyline. They've been good in the past, especially when quoting me on my 32, but I didnt laugh half as hard when even they quoted me £2200!

I told him to go sit on his biro and he said hold the line while he goes and speaks to his manager. Barely 2 minutes later he came back and had knocked £950 off the price to £1250. I told him i'd have a ring about and see what I can do

Now I know insurance has gone up in the last couple of years but only 5 months ago I rung Flux to see how much they could quote me in the hope to cancel my current policy and defect to them. In january just gone they quoted me £600, so over 50% increase in 5 months! Bearing in mind I only pay £420 FC for my stage 1 Skyline GTR!

So I ask you guys and girls. Who are you with at the moment?

I'm with Bell who are basically Admiral. They're by far the cheaper of the quotes I looked for.

Axa for me the last few years, AFAIK they only work out cheaper if you have plenty of years no claims though.

Don't bother phoning up, just whack your details into something like gocompare or moneysupermarket.

Insurance on the wife's Q5 was going to go from £400 to £900 with Diamond. 10 minutes online and all sorted with someone else (Elephant I think from memory...) and back in business at £450.

Huge divergence in quotes - some wanted £2000.

The problem I had was that some regard factory/dealer upgrades as mods, some don't. Of those that sensibly didn't, A-plan came up trumps. If you've got modifications, forget comparison sites.

My biggest bugbear is the threats that insurance companies dole out about non-disclosure of modifications and the accuracy of the data you supply them etc, seem to go out of the window when they make stuff up (like vehicle value, access to other cars, security fitted) so check the details of the quote carefully, get everything in writing and be very very wary of the assumptions comparison websites make.

Try esure, just changed to them after a few years with Swift who put the price up by quite a bit, someone has to pay all the advertising.

esure were good for me until i moved from london to selby in yorkshire, i phoned them to notify them of change of address and i was expecting my insurance to drop slightly, how wrong was i, they more than doubled my insurance, so i cancelled my policy with them, quick look on compare the market, and i got it for what i was paying in london

I did get a decent quote in the end. 700 quid fc with Sky insurance.

It seems the little brokers do the business for me at the moment

I'm gonna have one last ring round tomorrow just in case

Try Liverpool Victoria, we've moved both our cars to them recently.

I think the best thing to do is try the comparison websites. It really is a good idea.

I found the lowest for my car was The Green Insurance Company. Never heard of them but but underwritten by Royal and Sun Alliance.

Some arent on them eg. Direct line, but most of them are.

I hear Admiral being spoken of a lot too.

I'm with Admiral and pay £550 for a 320cd sport. 35 with 9 years ncd protected, but i'm coming up for renewal and have just got an SP30 that I fully expect them to ruin me for.

Hastings Direct came out cheap when I looked on Gocompare the other day

I'm with Admiral (which is the same company as Elephant, Diamond and Bell) and they used to be by far the cheapest for me (42, good postcode, 15yrs NCB, white collar job, 10k miles pa) however, since I made a claim to repair a car my premium has shot through the roof. I should not have to pay £850 for a 5 year old 330cd Cab; nor should I have to pay £700 for a 20 year old MB 190e.

Needless to say, I will not be with Admiral next year - I'm using comparison sites but also using a local broker.

Admiral charged me another £300 when I told them about my SP30, took me up to 6 points for about 6 months, but because they look at things over a 5 year period, the fact that I only have 3 points active now doesn't matter.
