Looking to buy a 745i (newer shape). They are quite cheap 2nd hand. Seen one on autotrader with 160k on the clock. I dont do many miles a year so the 25mpg doesnt put me off. Anything I should be aware of at this age?
It's a 1 owner from new, (used as a chauffeur ) 2002 model.

thanks

I do recall reading once that there were numerous problems with early production E65's that BMW took a year or two to resolve - I'm not sure what exactly - but it's worth doing some research... a 2003-2004 car would almost certainly be a safer proposition... but as always it's going to come down to cost.

Good luck, I have the diesel and it's a great car, but no comparison to the V8...

Anything to be wary of on the 730i in '03-'04 - any better/worse than 530i of same MY?
Think I've decided to leave the shed idea, and spend the extra.

From experience, lots of electrical issues with bad ones. The command system needs to be in good working order or that's £1300 + VAT to replace. Tyres are not cheap; min £200 a corner. If it has "Angel Eyes" and one / both are't working (you often see them not working and wonder why) they blow easily and it's a bumper off procerure to replace them.

There is always a reason that cars like this are cheap. It's a sub £10k car with £50k+ car repair bills.

To be totally fair, yes the bills can be astronomical when things go wrong and for general servicing, but another reason for them being so cheap is because they're just too large for most peoples needs. This means the market is smaller for them so they loose more value.

I've got a mate at work who bought an S class Mercedes off ebay a couple of years ago in immaculate condition for what he thought was a good price at the time, now he's looking at selling it but can't believe how little it's worth (despite all the warnings I gave him!rolleyes ).

The market just isn't there for them on the whole, hence you can pick up a bargain if your brave enough!. (If only I had room enough for an E38 7 series! frown )

I have a 2003 745i and its been a great car. Just make sure everything works. Lots of gadgets on these. The 4.4 V8 is a fantastic match to the car, about town expect around 19mpg, on a run 28-30mpg. No rust worries either with the aluminum bodies. Just make sure its been well serviced. Tyres were mentioned above, try and get a car with the 19' alloys, expect to pay around £150 a corner.

If your looking for a good one mine will be up for sale in the next two weeks, baby and dog means a new estate is on the cards.

Cheers,
C

Aluminium? Ah, didn't know that - thought that was Audi's USP.
