Hi all

I have a bit of a stubborn engine management light issue that's starting to get annoying. Had it on a diagnostic machine at an independant and the code came up with an odd code, the independant referred it to another and they came back with "electronic thermostat". I thought the engine management light only indicated emmision problems?
My first thought was to give the car a good service, so all filters, plugs, oil etc changed. Plugs were looking pretty black as was the front lambda, so I changed that as well. Oil consumption with the lamp on is horrendous and fuel economy / power is down.
If I clear down the fault then all is well while the engine is hot. Leave it overnight, start it up and all is still well but as soon as the engine gets up to temp again the lamp comes back on.
I've yet to change the rear lambda, the MAF looks fine (no guarantee I know but it looks spotless). Exhaust tips are now black due to the rich running. Also thrown a load of injector cleaner through it but still the problem keeps comng back once up to temp.

Any thoughts?

Cheers

Hi PJ S

thanks for that, the only thing of concern there is that none of them mention the increased oil consumption or a engine management fault. Unfortunately I don't know enough about these cars yet to start second guessing.

Cheers

Likewise, but useful nonetheless if you phone a dealership's service dept or independent/speciaist.
They should be able to suggest what's not functioning to cause the problems described.

Yep, cool.

Did open up a few other possibilities though with regards to oil breather pipes etc being partially blocked causing oil to be burnt during combustion. There's a reputable BMW independant just up the road so I'll get it on the diagnostic again and see what comes up.

Thanks again
