Driving to my parents on Saturday, my 1996 523i SE E39 began going slower & slower on the M40..
The more throttle I gave it the more it slowed & felt like being choked.
I ended up feathering the throttle just to keep her going but dropped to 40mph on the uphill sections.
I had pulled onto the hard shoulder to check for anything obvious, but already suspected the...cat!
I had a similar experience years ago in
my old Escort.
Anyway, RAC dutifully called, cat confirmed (as far as they could tell)...
Car dropped off at local KwikFit....
Cheapest they could do...£620! Problem is the exhaust is still the oem!
This makes it just over 15 years old, with 115,242 miles on clock.. 'Remarkable' said Mr Fit
Mr Fit also commented on how good condition my little 5 series was in for her age... Small consolation for £620 cat & exhaust.
Anyones exhaust last longer?
