Does anyone have experience with how reliable the twin turbo 3.0d engine is with higher mileage, say 100+?

Considering a 535d or X3 SD (so the 286 bhp version), and would appreciate any feedback on problems (or not) to be expected.

My 535d engine has been faultless over 241,000m
Just the usual other consumables you'd expect at that mileage like wheel bearings etc. Did have a gearbox refresh at 180k , but tow a fair bit

Think they are fairly reliable but there have issues with the HPFP (High pressure fuel pump) that are well documented on the net.

Thats for the petrol version. I put 134k on my 335d, exhaust manifold gasket, a few turbo actuators, numerous vacuum hoses for actuators, front crankshaft pulley stranded me. Apart from that ok, and it was heavily abused, but fresh oil every 10k without fail.

Ah ok.

So the diesel is a fairly reliable lump i'm guessing?

Yep, i was impressed by its reliability. Parts attached will mount up, DPF's are expensive, and my box was feeling very tired, but i don't exaggerate when i say mine was probably the most abused example in the country, including track work and Londons worst potholes.Always managed to make me grin though, a very capable tractor.

I purchased my 2005 535d at 26k miles and had no trouble until 52k miles when the smaller turbo failed. A bit dissapointing as it was a retaining bolt in the turbo.

You may get better reliability from other brands but I believe the other attributes make up for it.

Ill not be changing for a while.
