So I'm looking to sell my 54 reg 535d sport touring. 89K miles, FBMWSH, nav, xenons, pano roof, Logic 7 plus a few other goodies. Still under BMW's extended warranty. Is 10.4K too high, too low or just about right? Any advice would be appreciated. I know this sounds a bit like an advert but as a long time PHer I'm hoping this transgression will be forgiven.

Nope, standard. Didn't see the need and didn't want aggro with the BMW warranty.

Value or worth is whatever a buyer is prepared to pay, and the seller accept.
Use the various valuation guides here:

http://www.whatcar.com/valuations
http://www.virtual-showroom.co.uk/scripts/nuvv/nuv...
http://www.motoring.co.uk/free-car-valuation
http://www.parkers.co.uk/cars/used-prices/

From that, using Parker's model specific More Equipment* link (to see what cost what, what was standard, etc), and AutoTrader, you should be able to gauge whether your price is on the money, too ambitious, or too generous.

Only you can decide what the optional extras are worth, but the trade doesn't give them much thought.
Might make the car easier to sell, but doesn't add a lot to the book price.

I saw your advert and thought what an incredible bargain that is, I know it is 7 years old soon, but that is such a lot of car for £10k!

One thing I will say, if you have priced it at £10400 cause that is the absolute minimum you will take then fair enough, however if you have priced it at £10400 because you want to walk away with £10k then put the advert up at £9999, it will attract a whole new customer that may just be looking for BMW estates under £10k and it will look like the bargain of the century too.

That's my thinking too - I'm struggling to decide if I should part with it if that sort of money is all it will fetch. I'm thinking of switching to an E61 M5 but twice the insurance, twice the road tax and half the fuel economy and I pay another 20K for the privilege. No logic there at all. But I suppose that's hardly the point.

I thought the price sounded high when I read your original post, but it looks good value compared to what's in the PH classifieds. The 535d really does hold its value well for such a big and complex car.

For a private sale, I'd say you've priced it about right, compare to these two dealer cars.

Not to mention the fact that you won't show up in searches for cars under 10000...

Have you driven the M5?
I love the engine, I love the power and I love the SMG 'box, however, I just don't like the combo in the touring for some reason.
I have had two M3s with SMG and wouldn't have even considered a manual, but I don't think it suits the 5er, especially in touring guise.
If you haven't taken one out do so as it may save you a few quid.

I would get a really decent remap with a nice free flow exhaust system and DPF removal, get it up to 350bhp, and then fit the M5 wheel with paddles (I did and it transformed the 535d when on the back roads) and for a grand all in you have a different car.

Don't know about you but if I was looking to spend £10k I would at the very least be searching for cars up for sale at £11 k
Always a deal to be done smile

Drove one two weeks ago and fell in lust. It pushed all my buttons except for the net cost to make the switch.

Interesting thought. Will try to articulate where I wish the 535d were different.

Thats a lot of car, i see that at £11250 if warranty is long. Nice spec and comfort of BMW warranty, not too many like that about. Take £10750 minimum.

Where did you get the M5 wheel and paddles from and how much did it cost mate?

I see you've put the price up high now.

Having looked at the Market for quite sometime and in the position to buy over last 3 months, I can say the ones I've missed are which talking to seller the final prices were:

07 pre lci xenons, heated full electric comfort seats, pro nav, privacy glass, grey, full BMW service £13.3k. In hindsight if I lost out on this as someone went to view before me frown

55 plate 05 car, start stop button upgrade version, again full BMW service, xenons, nav, heated seats, panoramic roof sold £12.7k this even had recent new brakes and tyres. I passed as silver and sunroof not my first choice and still gutter I missed the grey one above.

You might br lucky to find a buyer at that price bracket.

For me I know on a private one I should be able to get circa 06 model with average mileage for £14k, so holding out.

Not sure how much the following sold but big cars ltd had a 06 50k, well spec'd for £15.9k. This was Indy trade, I expect if it was private closer to £14k

I know someone who brought a px stock from Toyota dealer, £11.9k 55 plate, again upgrade stop start button well spec'd.

Speaking to another forum member he brought he grey 05 although only mark he said was across tailgate which probably needed body shop attention due to scratch, £11.6k with 65k.

I think you had it priced about right to sell, £14k for a 54 plate is pushing it a bit, but you might strike lucky for a buyer who's prepared to pay that.

There are lci se models which are sub £14k though.

Best of luck. Seems like you want more for it, so will ultimately pass myself.

The Parker's price for the spec and mileage is 12.1 for a good car in a private sale. I think my car is better than most - not a door ding to be found and none of the usual car park scuffs.

The Parker's price doesn't take into account the Logic 7.1 sound system, the adaptive Xenon lights, the factory fitted detachable towbar, the winter wheels and tyres and the BMW comprehensive warranty. With the warranty a buyer can be comfortable that there's nothing wrong with the car - I would have no incentive not to get something fixed were it needed. So I decided 10.4 was far too low and I wanted at least 13.5 or more else I was happy to keep it.

that's fair enough. i know you were debating about price before, so good that you have something in mind.

bmw warranty might catch someone attention.
at £13.5k, you're competing against newer and lower mileage examples.

For me i want xenons, heated leater, pro nav. Anything else is a bonus and wouldn't pay more for another example if there were two side by side and one had a higher spec to be honest.

the ones i've quoted are private real sales

parkers without extras: 54 535d sport touring

Guide Price
View example
A car's value is directly affected by its mileage and fitted options, anywhere from £100 to £10,000.
Original Price £41,225
Franchised Dealer £12,520
Independent Dealer £11,240
Private Good £10,540
Private Poor £9,315
Part Exchange £9,610
Adjust for mileage and options for an accurate price.
Average mileage 70,000
Options fitted None

adjust for mileage (88-70)x£50 = less £900

Think your original price was priced to sell, but still a tough market. The extras and condition for first to view might be tempted by yours.
best of luck. not knocking it, but just based on what i've come across. as said you might find a person wanting that spec and ready to part

And so on to what I think the weaker points of the E61 535d are:

power - not really lacking in most real world conditions. and given the fuel economy it's a good compromise.

the gearbox - ah, there's my biggest whinge. The ZF HP26 box has this annoying habit that when you're coasting at idle at a few mph such as moving up to a roundabout it hesitates. You give it some throttle and nothing happens; it's like it's in neutral. A bit more throttle and still nothing, a bit more and then it drops into first and launches off at a good clip, far more than really desired. No clunks or bangs, just too rapid a launch. To be fair putting it into sport mode solves the problem. I spoke to a ZF tech and he smiled and said there was nothing wrong with the box and nothing that he could do; it was BMW's programming. Amazing that BMW has never sorted this. I had a full software reload done in 2008 and it didn't seem to make a difference. Have seen similar threads in a Jaguar forum so it's not unique to BMW.

the handling - I was initially disappointed by the E61's ride; compared to the E60 535d sport I drove I found it wallowed more at the rear in dips and undulations. A set of Koni FSDs sorted that - much better. I blame it on the air springs used in the estate. But it still rolls too much and feels too much like a barge. I drove the E61 M5 and thought, wow, this is what it can be like. So perhaps a set of KW V3s are worth a shot?
