Took my car in for it's first oil service last week to the Stealer. 300 odd quid & 40 mins later whilst waiting in the 'Fast Lane' & I was off. 72 hours later (2 hours 45 mins. in driving hours) the 'service due' light comes on for 'Brake Fluid'! Called up the Stealer & they said it should have been noticed as it was within 2 weeks but whilst I was booking it in, would I like an executive valet for 29.95? I initially thought that they were offering this as an apology but when reality kicked in, I realised that they couldn't give a monkey's about the inconvenience & just wanted more money. Just wondered what the deal is with the lights - is it going to happen on a regular basis?

The iDrive has a Check/Service menu, which will display how soon (or far off) various elements are going to need done/replaced.
It's CBS (condition based servicing), meaning that the variable parameters will change the number displayed, dependant on how you drive the car.

£300 odd? For just an oil & filter change? BMW used car warranty invalidation or not, that's a complete rip-off, even allowing for the few minutes to reset the computer so the iDrive displays the new mileage before needing redone.

It's a poor show. They should have noticed and saved you a second visit.

I would be looking for another dealer. Also, if your car is not under a BMW warranty, then take it to an Independent BMW specialist.

Following on from my original post. I took the car back today for the Brake Fluid change. Took around 30 minutes. When I came to settle up, the guy wanted to charge me another £23 plus VAT for something called 'Standard Scope'. I asked him what that was (as I had also paid for it 2 weeks ago when the oil service was done) & he said they check tyre pressures!!! I did ask him to have a sense of humour that charging me £46 plus VAT to check my tyre pressures was slightly excessive, considering that they should have spotted the brake fluid service was due anyway. There was no smile coming from this man. He said it is mandatory every time a vehicle comes in. Brake fluid on top was £94.80. Oh well, free hot chocolate. Can't wait for the next service light to come on!!!!

I think that 300 includes the pollen filters. I usually supply my own oil and do my own pollen filters (bought from ECP for roughly 20) and then the dealer's bill is under 100 for the oil change. Still a lot but far more reasonable.

I do this too, go to Opie for your oils.

that's ridiculous, and i've not heard of that being done. dads E92 M3 just come back from the dealers and no charges of that nature. also, if your tyre pressure monitoring system is working there is certainly no need to check the pressures so close together. i'd tell them to fk off, you didn't ask them to do it!

It would be stated on the invoice if they did the pollens but with CBS its usually one thing at a time unless the owner has gone way over the service interval mileage and coincided various service items together.

I thought standard scope was simply connecting the diagnostic machine up and downloading any codes?

I always tell them not to do the standard scope. It's just the resetting of the service lights. You can do that yourself by following the procedure laid out at http://www.bmwland.co.uk/forums/viewtopic.php?t=11... or do a search for "eXX reset lights"
