I've put it of for long enough now but I am going to have to replace at least one completely non functioning injector on my son's 140k E46 330d. It has been running on 5 cylinders for nearly a year now and he's getting a bit fed up of it! Plus its making it all a bit smelly.

Fortunately it seems to be No.1 thats misbehaving, (pulling the plug off makes no difference to the running) so at least its pretty get-at-able.

I did consider giving it a go when I had to replace the inlet manifold (split) a couple of weeks ago, but that was an unscheduled time off the road and not having anything resembling a slide hammer to hand I didn't want to reach a point of no return and leave it immobile.

So, I'm tempted to buy the pucker Sealey job off Ebay and then sell on again but if anyone feels like letting me use their's in exchange for beer tokens that would be great!. Repair is scheduled for W/C 18th July when he can get by without it for a couple of days

I'm W.Mids based btw

I'm not expecting a huge response to this appeal but if you don't ask etc..

Thanks chaps

Chris

Excuse the stupid question, but what are the symptoms of a failed injector? Just so I can pick them on mine when they start to go!

So whats his economy been over then last year?

Its £200 for the injector I seem to recall and its reasonable to conclude that when one fails the others may not be that far behind. I believe its cheaper to have them cleaned and serviced than replaced too.

Hi the injector should be around 130 exchange you done always need a puller and they are meant to be coded but you will not notice any difference in my oppinion.
Re the puller the injector is held in with a clamp via two nuts if I remember correctly a couple of days before hand sligthly loosen these this will allow slight movement and it will come out with only light pressure of a pry bar.
You could probably do this on the day in your drive it doesnt need to be driven just running smile

All good advice thanks chaps. Rental off ebay seems silly money so I have bought one and then I'll sell on if need be.

Economy hasn't been much affected actually - still returning 40+ which is more than I get from my '04 plate auto - but I have got half a dozen extra horses smile

Update:

Well, today was the day... Unpacked my nice shiny new puller, attached to injector, two sharp pulls on the slide hammer.......... and out it popped, easy as you like smile

Only problem now is that the local suppliers haven't got a recon available 'til tomorrow so we have some 'downtime'. Never mind could have been a lot worse.

You might need to get the injector coding for the ECU.
Try it first and see what happens, but either note down all of the numbers on the injector or take a good photo of the top before fitting.

That way, if you do need to recode the car for it, you won't need to take the engine apart to get the numbers.

To unseize the injector use Coke (non diet). Also some M57 engines need the pipe to the injector changing every time it is undone. It is vital to torque the pipe correctly.

Well bugger me.. one thing after the other.. Injector swap went fine - back on 6 cylinders now ... BUT:

I now have a problem with turbo 'boost' coming back up the inlet and through the maf sensor!.. Lots of 'whooshing', not much boost, not much power, and quite a bit of black smoke!

Any ideas what this could be? I had to replace a cracked inlet manifold on it a few weeks ago cos that was 'whooshing'...seems no end to this one!

I have posted this in technical so apologies for cross posting but thought I'd mention it here as well!

cheers

Chris
