Most V8 parts are the same as a 540, IE brakes, suspension etc. Its the V8S which has the expensive brakes etc. Though, The 4.6 was only used in this model I think - parts for the V8S engine can come from an X5.
You shouldn't have too many problems with the engine though, apart from the usual E39 V8 cooling system to watch out for.

There's two versions (as noted), the V8 and V8S.
Be aware that the brakes on the V8S are unique to that car so expect just over a four figure sum for replacements on the front.
The V8S has a touch more power but with negligible effect on the fuel consumption. The real cost is insurance and petrol. They're both pretty robust so only the usual consumables of ball joints etc need attention on a regular basis. Especially if you use it as intended.

Hi - I have run both the B10 V8 and an E39 M5.
They are subtly different and it would depend on your usage as to which to recommend. The M5 is by far the more focused driver car. It had that ability to shrink around you when you got serious.
The B10 was more of a jumped up 540i (in the very best way) and would be my choice if you do a lot of town/traffic work. The auto box worked well and the steering wheel buttons helped a little. But if you love a manual they are no substitute.
If you want something a bit different then go for the B10. I've also had an AMG E55 and the B10 was the better car. For me though I'd have another M5 first.

Thanks for the info guys. I think a 'cooking version' B10 might be the answer then. I've got the 355 for hooning about in, I just fancy something nice for longer trips and around town, as the GTR (much as I love it) is a tad wearing and the Mrs hates it with a passion.
Plus, I'm getting old and the auto box appeals.

Catcussed, make sure the engine number is post 14500, as prior to that Alpina saw fit
to use an "organic" material for the head gaskets, and with e39s general propensity
to eat it's cooling system at about 100k they let go, resulting in a bill for about £2500!
Also the later cars have 347bhp which is always useful..

Ah, OK. Tks for the heads up.
Ideally, I need to go test drive one first, before I make a decision to purchase...
You might have a gander at this one being sold by a PHer: http://pistonheads.com/sales/2989334.htmIdeally, I need to go test drive one first, before I make a decision to purchase...

Another detail of ALPINAs that may or may not be relevant to your interests when comparing it with the M5 - they are not fitted with 155mph top speed limiters...
