Rough Idle on E36 318
Discussion
Hello all
Yesterday i acquired a 318 E36 saloon from a friend of the family for a ...................tenner. Yup £10. shes leaving the country and wanted rid fast. Its a good car except when cold it wont idle properly, just keeps stalling. It gets better when warm but isnt great. We sprayed all the connections with connection cleaner but this had no effect. Very occasionally it will idle fine, for instance when it went through a car wash. But most of the time it stalls approaching junctions or idles very low on the revs.
Any ideas?
Cheers!

first thing first, take the intake elbow off (the one that looks like a big ribbed rubber hoover hose) and give it a good flex, check for any cracks between the ridges. they're sometimes hard to spot and a new elbow is quite cheap even from main dealers.
next check the idle control valve functions properly and that no air breather pipes are split. there's a lot of google stuff out there on this.
good luck

Yup thats what i forgot! That rubber hose has got some splits in it. We got this to practice car mechanics on, as you can see we know NOTHING! Could this be the issue?
It seems its a common problem, il look at getting a new Idle Control Valve as this could be the issue.

pipe first, that'll really help. you're letting unmetered air into the engine through the splits at the moment. in other words the MAF calculates the amount of fuel the engine will need by measuring the flow of air past it and sends that info to the brain. the additional air getting in through the cracks after the MAF is then changing the fuel/air ratio and confusing the car.It seems its a common problem, il look at getting a new Idle Control Valve as this could be the issue.

hope this helps.
Its a common problem on these and a lot of the time its not as simple a fix as it seems.
My missus has a 318 touring and it does the same. I have been all over the vacuum/breathing system and changed the rocker cover breather as it was burst but its still not right.
There is quite a bit on the web about this problem. The ICV is tucked under the inlet manifold and is an integrated part, not like the small cylindrical ones that you get so its a b
h to clean out and means taking the manifold off.
Mine really makes a sucking noise through the small separator at the back of the throttle body, there is a small vent slot in this at the top and I think there is too much vacuum at this point. I don't know why though.

pretty sure the cracked hose and the idle control valve were the first two things i said it could be :Pbut yes, thanks for all the help chaps, it runs good when it wants to so im taking that as a good sign that there is nothing properly wrong with it and will hopefully be a cheap fix.
