Hello, just looking for some advice for a mate who has recently bought a 2005 E46 320, i am not going to blabber on but basically he is not too good with computers and forums so it was easier if i asked on his behalf.

He currently has a standard head unit with cd player like below.

He would like to put in a Dynavin unit for the E46 as it will allow him to have ipod, sat nav, video (pretty pointless) and bluetooth (which he already has). These look like the best units so again any advice on these is welcomed. Seem a bit pricey but they do not look like some tac from halfords, i think look fairly standard which is what he is after.

Firstly can you remove the heat controls ect to the compartment below and how hard is this, i am sure i have seen it done but not sure it is definitely possible, secondly how do you remove the current head unit and is it hard ect.

Any advice would be welcome cheers!!

To move the climate control, you'll need a new fascia panel without the cubbie hole. A quick google will reveal all. I understand it's not a big job.

To remove the radio is also pretty straight forward.

You need to carefully remove the dash trim (wood, carbon or aluminium bits) either side of the head unit itself. I use a butter knife to get behind them and lever them off. Just work slowly and carefully. Once they're off, you'll see two screws which secure the head unit in place. Just remove these and the head unit will slide out. Taking the wiring connector off and you're done.

Hi

The Dynavin unit is the best of the cheap chinese electronics units out there for the E46. For me, the ONLY thing is has going for it, is it has close to oem looking aesthetics from an aftermarket manufacturer. The actual components, PCB's, IC's etc are all generic.

So, if the requirement is for all the bells and whistles in terms of features, then do indeed consider the Dynavin. The 'other' clones and cheap chinese 'tat' out there will be built to even a lesser standard and quality. Performance of the Dynavin is acceptable now that it's on it's 5th version I believe. Sound quality is better than oem but substantially lower than a premium brand unit.

If the focus would be on sound quality, build and performance, then I'd suggest looking at a single or double DIN install of a premium brand, high quality and reputable unit such as Alpine, Kenwood, Pioneer and Sony etc.

Plenty of items available in Halfords is indeed products from premium brand manufacturers with one or two obviously cheap chinese made 'tat'

Cheers, Dennis!
