E36 316 compact - Drifting???
Discussion
Hey guys,
recently had some MOT problems with my Beamer (everything mechanically fine just loose wires methinks). Anyway I am considersing just declaring it SORN and using it for a drift/track car. I was just looking for peoples opinions on what to do or if it is a good idea to do anything of the sort...
Its a standard E36 compact 1995 316i at this point it is completely standard apart from a custom exhaust (no not a massive exhaust that shatters windows just an aftermarket stainless steel one) and an induction kit.
As i said, any suggestions?

Yea the power might be a problem but I'm hoping that if I weld the diff up strip it out etc it will become light enough to be able to hold it sideways, it would be a shame to scrap the car for one little fault. I was thinking of finding a 2l lump and sticking it in there to give it the extra power it needed... Any thoughts?? :S

The litlle 1.6 lump won't afford you the consistent power you'll need to develop your skills. An M44 1.9 will drop straight in from the 318ti or 318is.
Alternatively, you could transplant a 6 pot although this will be a bit more work.
I'd personally look at an M52 2.3 or preferably 2.8 engine. These produce decent torque figures making power control much easier.
The M50 2.5 lump is a bit fo a screamer in comparison, so it depends on what you're wanting to achieve.

Remove as much weight as possible. Plastic back side windows and so on, drill holes in things, cut out what you can.
Weld the diff.
Get decent secondhand coilovers.
Big chavvy air filter in homemade box witha hole cut in the front of the car to force air in.
Remove the cats and free up the exhaust.
Save up and read as much as you can and fit a 1.9 and a supercharger. Should be easy enough done with secondhand mini parts, pulley from a god knows what and custom bracket and piping engine management isnt that dear either if you DIY it.

As above, depends what you want to spend.Alternatively, you could transplant a 6 pot although this will be a bit more work.

Know a lad who runs 2.8 straight six sat in what was a 316 compact.
Goes like f
k, loves abuse, and screams when tickled. That'd be my way forwardThanks guys, I am in the process of stripping it at the moment, of all un-needed things such as rear seats (how over-rated!) for the moment i have put it up on ramps, removed the bonnet for ease and started planning, i think a 1.9 straight swap is a good idea if im honest, i will see what i can get hold of, ill keep you posted?
Cheers.
