Rusty arch on Z3
Discussion
I have a 2002 Z3 which has started to get rust bubbles appear on the front drivers side arch.
I just took it to the local bodyshop to get a quote, and he told me that they would have to respray the whole bonnet to make it blend in and that it couldnt be done well enough to the crease where the arch is.
Is this right?
I am waiting for the quote to be e-mailed through to me, but I can imagine it's going to be big £££ if they are wanting to respray the whole of it.

I have never been a big fan of grinding out rust and then filling it as it always seems to come back.
Look for a non rusty bonnet, then get that one painted.
Just think of the cost of labour to grind, fill, sand, prep and paint? That would be a few hours I guess, it only takes 10 mins to fit another bonnet!
and yes I think they would have to spray the whole bonnet as the swage line up the bonnet is not sharp enough to loose the paint line. (probably)

I'm just having the arches taken care of on my E36, along with some other general tidying up. I weighed up the options and decided to get new wings and, having been to see progress today, am very glad I did.
I'd have been chasing my tail with the old wings - it's only when you see them off the car that you realise the bubbling round the arch is the tip of the iceberg and it wouldn't be long before it was coming through somewhere else.
In the end, I've had both sides of the car completely resprayed and also the boot lid (whoever drilled the holes for the spoiler never rustproofed them). It now looks like it just rolled out of the factory - worth every penny.
If you're selling the car in the next 6 months then by all means get the existing wings tarted up but, if like me you're looking to hold on to it for a while, I think I'd be considering replacements.
I'm not made of money, but when I remember how much I'm not paying in depreciation or interest on bankloans for a bland new Eurobox it helps the wallet to open up more easily
