Standard cd problems

Mrs Saleens new 2001 330 has a problem where in the standard head unit does not acknowledge the multi changer in the boot, along with the changer wont eject the cartridge, is the simle answer take it out and replace with an up to date unit or is there a fix out there? I have checke the fuse on the back of the cd changer and that is fine.
