Which 5 Series Touring?
Discussion
Please help with another what car type thread...
I currently have a E91 320d Touring, which has now done over 100k. Been very happy with it for the 3 years and 70k ive had it, but its time to change and I fancy something bigger.
I take the company car allowance, and have a fuelcard which covers private milage. So Which 5 series touring do I go for? Budget is upto about £20k.
Think its either between a 525/530d, or a 525i. Petrol will obviously sound better, and be potentially more reliable? Diesel will have better resale, though cost more to buy for an equivilant model...
I do about 20k a year. I'm leaning towards the 525d, any opinions?

We have had a 525d (LCI) for about 7 months now and we have no major complaints. It is clearly not a rocket ship, but from a motorway cruising perspective it is fit for purpose, ie enough power to make solid progress, whilst also returning reasonable mpg (ie circa 40mpg at about 80 leptons)
If you search the forums, you'll find similar discussions and essentially the 525d is a detuned 530d lump (with some different elements etc...I am a sure someone will provide the details, or you'll find it in the other threads).
If I had my way again, I would probably go for the 530d, as it is slightly more refined and clearly has a bit more power. We have the M sport and have not yet switched out of the run flats yet. I would probably go for the SE spec if I did it again as it my opinion the ride can be a bit harsh(we have an M3 for hooning around, so the M package in our family car is a bit wasted)

After running a 540i Touring for three years, I am just coming up to a further three years with a 520d Touring.
The 520d is a late 2008 model with 177 bhp and the general performance, over all road types, has never disappointed. Fuel consumption is exceptional at around 45mpg in town and around 55mpg on a longer run.
The newer 520d has something like 184 bhp available and should provide as much performance as you will ever need!
I'd go for the 520d and save yourself a fistful of cash!

But for a car a coupe of years old, it would appear that I get more car for the money with a petrol! 520d will probably be worth more after a few years though...
Interesting about M-sport / SE... Tried both a 520d and 530d one after another (both auto's, both M-Sport). Found the ride fine compared to my 3 series (also on run-flats) but thought the 520d would have to be manual, though auto suited the 530d...

My parents replaced a 530d with a 525i.
Plus points:
Smoother, quieter, a joy to waft around town, no diesel clatter, no diesel rattle at the lights. Barely any less economical - returns over 40mpg on normal motorway trips without driving with economy in mind.
Negative points:
No more reliable than a modern diesel, the newer N53 engine is plauged with fuel pump/injector/coil issues so its imperative you have a BMW warranty.
